F LIGHT T EST V ELOCITY

V ELOCITY Velocity is the distance an object travels (in a particular direction)* in a given amount of time. Latin: velox, swift Not quite the same as speed (which has no direction component) * distance + direction = displacement

V ELOCITY If we travel 60 miles in one hour, our velocity is 60 miles per hour. If we travel 60 miles in 2 hours, our velocity is 30 miles per hour. If we travel 60 miles in ¼ hour, our velocity is 240 miles per hour.

V ELOCITY

E XAMPLE #1 Suppose you go on a long walk. It takes you four hours to travel 15 miles. What is your average speed? Given t = 4 hrs d = 15 miles Unknown Equation Substitute Solve

E XAMPLE #2 Suppose you go on a fast bike ride. It takes you 35 minutes to travel 12 miles. What is your average speed? Given t = 35 min d = 12 miles Unknown Equation Substitute Solve

D ISTANCE If our speed is 100 miles per hour and we travel for two hours, we will travel 200 miles. If our speed is 100 miles per hour and we travel for 0.5 hours, we will travel 50 miles. If our speed is 100 miles per hour and we travel for 0.25 hours, we will travel 25 miles.

D ISTANCE

E XAMPLE #3 Suppose you swim for 30 minutes at an average speed of 100 yards per minute. How far will you have traveled by the end of that time? Given t = 30 min v = 100 yards / min Unknown Equation d = vt Substitute Solve

E XAMPLE #4 Suppose you fly a plane for 1.6 hours at an average speed of 120 nautical miles per hour. How far will you have traveled by the end of that time? Given t = 1.6 hrs v = 120 nm/hr = 120 knots Unknown Equation d = vt Substitute Solve

T IME If we travel at 100 miles per hour, it will take us two hours to travel 200 miles. If we travel at 10 miles per hour, it will take us 20 hours to travel 200 miles. If we travel at 1,000 miles per hour, it will take us 0.2 hours to travel 200 miles.

T IME

E XAMPLE #5 How much time will it take you to travel 100 meters if you can run 12 m/s? Given d = 100 m v = 12 m / s Unknown Equation Substitute Solve

E XAMPLE #5 How much time will it take you to travel 1,400’ if you travel at 40’/s? Given d = 1,400’ v = 40’ / s Unknown Equation Substitute Solve

G RAPHICALLY Making a graph of distance vs. time quickly summarizes changes in an object’s motion.
