Neutron monitors: state-of-the-art instruments for cosmic ray nucleon detection at GeV energies Primary cosmic ray (proton, ion or solar neutron, E>450 MeV): air shower neutron production in the Pb material surrrounding the counters Detected signal depends on geomagnetic cutoff & anisotropy of the primary nucleons.

NMDB project: goals upgrade stations and connections to make high-resolution NM data available in real-time build state of the art, centralised database with distributed mirrors (MySQL) collect high-resolution NM data in real-time, make it publicly available in a common format develop application tools using NM data (solar energetic particle event alert, dosimetry calculations, cosmic ray characteristics outside the geomagnetosphere, at the top and inside the Earth's atmosphere)‏ create a public outreach website to inform about cosmic rays and possible effects on humans, technological systems, and environment

NMDB applications: long-term cosmic ray monitoring Count rate time profile1957-2009: solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays Cosmic ray count rate (relative units) Sunspot index RI 12

NMDB applications: ionisation of the atmosphere and dose rates Ionisation rate due to GCR, 3.2 km above sea level: 2009 June 01 12:00 UT

NMDB applications: ionisation of the atmosphere and dose rates Dose rate due to GCR, 10.5 km above sea level: 2009 June 01 12:00 UT

Count rate time profiles 2005 Jan 20 observed at two NM stations Derived data: map of the radiation dose received by civil aircraft at the peak of the event at height 12 km. Derived data: amplitude (top) and spectral index of relativistic protons (© University of Bern). NMDB applications: solar energetic particle events
