4 ◦ Tone: ◦ the attitude the author presents his/her writing in ◦ A change in tone can change the meaning of something in a story ◦ Diction is key to ◦ Must read between the line to get ◦ Ask: How would the author sound if they were telling you this story in person? ◦ Mood: ◦ Feelings or emotions the reader feels while reading ◦ A result of the tone the author’s ◦ Both affected by setting, character, and plot ◦ Ask: How do you feel emotionally about the piece?
