2 Trustworthy, Honest and Ethical  What is being trustworthy, honest and ethical?  Why is it important?  How do you do it?

3 What is “Being Trustworthy, Honest, and Ethical?”  Being Trustworthy: Doing what you say – and to a high quality level  Being Honest: Telling the whole truth, all that you do or do not know about the situation  Being Ethical: Doing what is right or fair for everyone involved  Remember to always treat others as you would like to be treated!

4 Importance to You of Being Trustworthy, Honest, and Ethical  Gaining people’s respect  Gaining responsibility –Can you be trusted to do a good and honest job?  Gaining freedom –Because you are responsible  Being personally satisfied and proud of your work –Because you have nothing to hide

5 Importance to Others That You Are Trustworthy, Honest, and Ethical  Others will know that you will treat them fairly and not try to take advantage of them  Others can trust you to do your work well

6 How to Be Trustworthy  Others can depend on you to do what is right  You do what you say will be done –In other words, you follow through  You can work hard without supervision  You regularly display behavior that builds up others

7 How to Be Honest  You live by the rules and laws of all groups  You are truthful, even when difficult consequences may result  You admit mistakes, faults, and inappropriate behavior  You accept responsibility for your own behavior and actions

8 How to Be Ethical  You are fair and lawful  You are committed to being ethical (making the right choices)  You make ethical choices even when tough consequences may result

12 Definition Activity  Define the words: –Trustworthy –Honest –Ethical  Give examples of times when you exemplified each term (please provide three separate examples)

13  Trustworthy- someone can count on you. They can believe you. You are reliable. They can depend on you. –Example: Friend needed help when he needed something, he knew that I was someone he could ask

14  Honest- A sense of honor; Upright and fair in dealing; Truthful; When someone tells the truth –Example: When someone drops money and you give it back

15  Ethical- Follows the rules; In accordance with accepted principals of conduct –Example: “I’m ethical with all my friends”

16 Trustworthy, Honest, and Ethical: Careers Activity  Consider the following careers: –Judge –Waiter –Store Manager –Coach –Police Officer –Teacher –House Keeper  For each career: –What trust issues are involved in this job? How could this person violate trust? –What honest issues are involved in this job? How could this person be dishonest? –What ethical issues are involved in this job? How could this person be unethical?

17 Trustworthy, Honest, and Ethical: Careers Activity  Develop a table: –List the words Trust, Honesty, and Ethical across the top of the table –List at least five different careers down the side of the table –Fill in the table, writing what trust, honesty, and ethical issues people run into in their daily lives

18 Word: Trustworthy Picture: Definition: To be reliable Word used in a sentence: My friend is trustworthy because I know he can keep a secret. My friend is a trustworthy, reliable person.

19 Word: Honesty Picture: Definition: To have a sense of honor; To be upright and fair in dealing; To tell the truth The word used in a sentence: I am honest when I tell my mom I will do something and I follow through and do it.

20 Word: Ethical Picture: Definition: Be responsible; To follow the rules Sentence: When people listen and follow the rules they are being ethical.

21 Trustworthy, Honest, and Ethical Person Activity  Select a person you know who is trustworthy, honest, and ethical –It can be a family member, a character on TV or in a movie, a coworker, or a friend  Make a poster regarding how the person displays this behavior –Use words and pictures –Make it neat and clear  Think about whether the person demonstrates the following characteristics: –Others can depend on him/her to do what is right –Can be trusted to work hard without supervision –Displays behavior that builds trust in others –Lives by the laws and rules –Admits mistakes, faults, and inappropriate behavior –Is committed to being ethical –Makes ethical choices even if consequences may result

23 Commit to Being More Trustworthy, Honest, and Ethical  Select an adult who you see frequently –Parent –Aunt –Uncle –Grandparent –Coach –Teacher  Ask him or her to rate you on being trustworthy, honest, and ethical

24 Commit to Being More Trustworthy, Honest, and Ethical  After the adult has rated you, meet with the adult to develop an improvement plan. –Identify two characteristics that are your best strengths –Identify two characteristics that you will work to improve –Commit to at least one thing that you will do to improve each characteristic –Do it!

25 Commit to Being More Trustworthy, Honest, and Ethical  Put the process down on paper –In your best handwriting –On a computer –Using the format that I will provide you with
