6 How to Read an AccuBore Electronic Bore Gage The Starrett AccuBore is an electronic, pistol-grip, high-quality, trigger-activated three-point contact bore gaging system with extended range. To measure the internal diameter with the bore gage, do the following: 1.Press the On button. 2.Squeeze the trigger. 3.Insert the gage into the bore. 4.Release the trigger for an instant reading from the large, easy-to-read digital display. 5.Press the Mode button for inch/metric conversion. The Go/No Go lights quickly indicator whether or not the bore is within a preset tolerance window. 6.Document the reading. 7.Press the Off button to shut off the gage.

8 How to Measure with an Electronic Internal Micrometer 1.Press the Set button briefly to switch on the micrometer. The word “CAL” is displayed. 2.Press the Set button again to activate the electronics. 3.Press the Mode button until the desired measurement mode - Inch or Millimeter appears in the display. 4.Place the micrometer into the appropriate measuring ring to set or check the calibration. 5.Place the gage into the bore to be measured, ensuring that the anvils sit squarely on the surface of the bore. 6.Twist the ratchet controller three times or as necessary to achieve a set pressure on the anvils. 7.Once the gage is tightly seated against the bore, obtain the measurement from the LCD Display. 8.To switch off, press the Set button and hold until the display shuts off. For instructions on zero recall, setting references (up to three: 1, II, or III), and preset mode and recall, and minimum and maximum settings, tolerance mode, refer to the Digital Internal Micrometer Operating Instructions Manual.

9 82 Bore Gage Components Probe Gage Body Dial Face This Bore Gage is calibrated for two (2) revolutions and is a comparative reading tool. The gage is initially set by a master gage to the required dimension and then the operator checks the work piece to a plus or minus deviation from that dimension. The gage is graduated in one thousands of an inch (.0001”).

10 How to Measure with a #82 Bore Gage 1.Set the probe according to the Instruction Manual that shipped with your gage. 2.Squeeze the probe closed with your fingers and insert the probe in the hole. 4.Hold the gage with the dial down and then after engagement, roll the dial up parallel with the hole. Observe the needle’s furthest travel. This is the size of the hole. 5.Add or subtract the figure shown on the dial from the true zero. This will signify if you must add or subtract material. 12 How to Measure with an Electronic Internal Micrometer 1.Press the Set button briefly to switch on the micrometer. The word “CAL” is displayed. 2.Press the Set button again to activate the electronics. 3.Set the desired measured mode by pressing the Mode button until either Inch or Millimeter appears. 4.Place the micrometer into the appropriate measuring ring to set or check the calibration. 5.Place the gage into the bore to be measured, ensuring that the anvils sit squarely on the surface of the bore. 6.Twist the ratchet controller three times to achieve a set pressure on the anvils. 7.To switch off, press the Set button and hold until the display shuts off.

13 How to Measure with a Mechanical Bore Gage The Mechanical Bore Gage features extended travel, reducing the need to exchange anvils. 1. Read the highest figure visible on the barrel of the micrometer. Multiply this number by 0.1 inches and record the result. 2.Count the number of lines that are visible on the barrel between the highest figure that is visible and the thimble edge. Multiply this number by 0.025 inches and record the result. 3. Determine the number of the line on the thimble that coincides with, or has just passed, the revolution, the long line, on the barrel. Multiply that number by.001 inches and record the result. 4.Add the results from Steps 1, 2 and 3 together to determine the interior diameter being measured.

14 How to Measure with a Dial Bore Gage 1. Insert the bore gage measuring head into an appropriate setting master. 2.Carefully rock the tool back and forth in the setting master causing the needle to find the reversal point. 3.Rotate the bezel on the dial indicator to zero. 4.Insert the gage into the bore and rock the tool back and forth until the indicator hand finds its reversal point, which represents the actual size of the bore to be measured. IMPORTANT: A more precise reading can be achieved if both the mastering of the bore gage and the reading taken in a bore are performed in the same direction.

15 How to Measure with a Dial Bore Gage, cont. 5.Adjust the tolerance hands to the range to be controlled. 6.Record the value of the largest deviation away from "0" on the dial face. Record the deviation as a positive number if it falls to the right of "0," and a negative number if it falls to the left of "0.“ 7.Add or subtract the value of the largest deviation from the calibrated value of the bore gauge. For example, if the gauge was zeroed at 5 inches, and the largest deviation was.007 inch to the right of the "0" on the dial face, then the final measurement of the bore is 5.007 inches. Alternatively, if the largest deviation was.006 inches to the left of the "0" on the dial face of a gauge calibrated to 5 inches, then the final measurement of the bore is 4.994 inches.

17 How to Measure with a Dial Bore Gage The Dial Bore Gage is intended for bore measurements beyond the size range of the 82 series. It is a comparison gage and should be set with a master ring gage, gage blocks with parallel jaws, outside micrometer or vernier caliper. 1. Place the bore gauge in a micrometer locked to the same diameter of the hole being measured. 2. Rotate the indicator's dial until the pointer aligns with the "0" marking on the dial face. 3.Insert the dial bore gauge in the bore, ensuring both anvils of the gauge touch the wall. 4.Gently rock the bore gauge back and forth while keeping the anvils along the same axis plane.

18 How to Measure with a Dial Bore Gage, cont. 5. When the pointer starts to reverse itself and heads in the opposite direction on either side of the "0” marking, record the measurement. 6. Remove the bore gauge from the hole. 7.Add or subtract the recorded value from the target number the indicator was calibrated to. For example, if the bore gauge's indicator was zeroed to 2 inches, and the pointer changed direction at the.007-inch marking on the dial face, the final measurement of the hole is 2.007 inches. Alternatively, if the pointer traveled counter-clockwise and changed direction.007 inches to the left of the "0" on the indicator, the final measurement of the hole is 1.993 inches.
