9 Neuromuscular Junction
The axonal ending of a motor neuron and the sarcolemma form a neuromuscular junction. When a nerve impulse reaches the end of an axon, voltage-regulated calcium channels in its membrane open , allowing Ca2+ to flow in from the extracellular fluid into the axonal terminal. The axonal terminal contains vesicles filled with neurotransmitter acetylcholine (Ach), which is released when the Ca2+ is present. Acetylcholine diffuses across the synaptic cleft and attaches to Ach receptors on the sarcolemma, opening Na+ channels and initiating depolarization of the sarcolemma. A. D. B. – C.
