KTP Assessment Criteria May 2016

Assessment system changes New system in place for May 2016 KTP close Aligns with other Innovate UK assessment systems Prepares KTP for full integration to new Innovate UK systems in the future Applications scored by 5 randomly chosen Advisers outside region of origin – no Regional Group Moderation panel to agree final rank order list / concentrate on those near quality & funding lines

Assessment Assessors will consider the intrinsic quality of the application being assessed Assessors will score on case presented on the form and associated attachments only – they cannot try to interpret a meaning where one is not clear All applications will be assessed against same criteria and treated equally Throughout the applications Assessors will be establishing whether the case presented is realistic and well-defined There is no definitive correct answer for a section There are no Adviser recommendations There are no ‘PAG Amendments’

KTP Project Criteria Published criteria for what a KTP ‘is’ remain unchanged Strategic relevance to the business Demonstrably innovative Sound business case, delivering high impact / wealth creation Clear need for the knowledge base input and clear KT Stimulating and challenging for the academic team Intellectually challenging for Associate The outcomes/benefits would not occur without the KTP Clear knowledge transfer (not consultancy or contract research) The project must not replace the use of independent consultants The project must not replace solutions that can be obtained off the shelf The potential benefits will be likely to accrue

KTP Assessment & scoring criteria For KTP assessment from May 2016 we are going to have 4 scoring criteria Impact, Innovation, Challenge & Cohesiveness - Scored 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) - Feedback will be provided to each of the assessment criteria will be provided to the applicants ‘Fundable’ Yes/No - Opportunity to explain decision

Impact Impact – having a marked effect or influence; Impact on - have a strong effect on someone or something Proposals must demonstrate a significant opportunity to impact on the organisations/company’s financial position (i.e. profit, turn-over productivity and cost savings) The opportunity to embed new capabilities within the company or across the organisation as a whole and to develop a culture of and capacity for ongoing innovation seen as having a wider impact

Innovation “Invention is about making new items, or finding new ways of making items. Innovation involves bringing this new idea to the market, that is, turning an invention into a product.” An innovative project should not be seen as just keeping pace with the competition but aspiring to becoming a leader in the field, best in class. Innovation brings new products and/or services to market and increases productivity A high quality innovative project provides an opportunity for the company/organisation to do something new for itself and/or create a new commercial opportunity and embed the capability to do it again for further benefit The organisation should aspire to and be able to demonstrate their commitment to innovate and then innovate again and again

Challenge Challenge - A test of one's abilities or resources in a demanding but stimulating undertaking Challenges the practices of the company partner and the market(s) it operates within Challenges the academic team to translate research into commercial capability Results in significant development of the knowledge base institution’s commercially relevant case study material, and has the potential to demonstrate impact to enhance its research and teaching programmes The project provides a clear career opportunity for the Associate accelerated career development

Cohesiveness Cohesiveness reflects the requirement that the entire application must link together and form a cohesive story or virtuous circle. Often the components of an application are individually strong but they do not link cohesively together Assessment will focus on checking that the application is cohesive in all its elements and logical throughout i.e. the strategic aims, business plan, project plan etc. are in alignment with each other
