The Handbook acts as an important reference for employment opportunities in the key sectors.

5 Retail sector An array of 70 malls and hundreds of other outlets caters to a domestic market of more than four million residents and 15 million visitors annually. The UAE ranked 7 th in the Global Retail Development Index for 2015 Market expected to reach Dh200 billion by 2017, growing by 5% on average each year. Source: Department of Economic Development, Government of Dubai, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry Dubai's retail market would surpass $52 billion in sales by 2020 with average annual growth of more than 8%. Low engagement of Emirati nationals due to low-entry pay packages, long working hours and a perceived lack of status. Dubai ranked 2 nd “Best Shopping City” in the world after New York, according to a readers' survey by popular travel website Condé Nast Traveler (CNT). Retail and wholesale trade accounts for 29% of Dubai's gross domestic product. The sector is expected to boost its business to Dh140 billion by 2021 from current Dh107 billion. A key growth driver of the sector is Dubai Strategic Plan and the World Expo 2020. Thanks to tax free sales, shopping in the UAE is an attractive additional advantage of tourism. The number of malls and retail shops is expected to continue to grow, with the expansion of the tourism industry.

The private sector is expected to offer the most employment options in the next few months and be the driving force of job growth in the MENA region. 7 Fujairah Statistics Centre Hospitality activity According to Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), of the hundreds of thousands of people employed in the hospitality sector, an estimated 3160 are Emiratis (as of 2014). STR: Middle East and Africa hotel pipeline for August 2016 UAE reported 28,082 rooms in 97 hotels to be under construction.

8 Emiratisation initiatives Dubai Parks and Resorts recruitment roadshows across the country to employ 1000 Emiratis over the next year. 800 Emirati candidates with high school education or below will be provided six months of training. Jumeirah group (the global luxury hotel company and a member of Dubai Holding) has launched an Emiratisation initiative on social media to encourage UAE nationals to pursue careers in hospitality. Expo 2020 Dubai is likely to create 277,000 jobs the number of tourists in Dubai to reach 20 million people Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing The Emiratisation Task Force was formed in 2002 to build awareness of career opportunities within the hospitality sector “START” vocational training programme for UAE nationals to work in the hospitality and tourism sectors aims to increase the number of Emiratis working in the sector by 15% a year until 2020 in accordance with the Tourism Vision 2020. Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority Khibrati programme gives Emirati students part-time jobs in the hospitality sector while they continue their studies programme that trains students to work in hotels.
