2 New York State Testing in Grades 3 - 5
A snapshot of student achievement, as measured by NYS testing, across all grades in ELA, Math, and Science. The data from the NYS assessments are used to examine and inform instructional practice, drive curricular decisions, as well as identify students in need of academic intervention services. 3 NYS Level 1: Students performing at this level are well below proficient in standards for their grade. They demonstrate limited knowledge, skills, and practices embodied by the NYS CCLS and are considered insufficient for the expectations at this grade. NYS Level 2: Students performing at this level are partially proficient in standards for their grade. They demonstrate knowledge, skills, and practices embodied by the NYS CCLS and are considered partial but insufficient for the expectations at this grade. NYS Level 3: Students performing at this level are proficient in standards for their grade. They demonstrate knowledge, skills, and practices embodied by the NYS CCLS that are considered sufficient for the expectations at this grade. NYS Level 4: Students performing at this level excel in standards for their grade. They demonstrate knowledge, skills, and practices embodied by the NYS CCLS that are considered more than sufficient for the expectations at this grade. 4 Shifts in ELA Literacy Shift 1 Balancing Informational & Literary Text Students read a true balance of informational and literacy text. Shift 2 Knowledge in the Disciplines Students develop a knowledge about the world through text rather than direct instruction. Shift 3 Staircase of Complexity Students read the central, grade appropriate text around which instruction is centered. Shift 4 Text-based Answers Students engage in rich and rigorous evidence based conversations about text. Shift 5 Writing from Sources Writing emphasizes use of evidence from sources to inform or make an argument. Shift 6 Academic Vocabulary Students constantly build the transferable vocabulary they need to access grade level complex texts. Instructional shifts of the NYS CC reflected in the assessments, Grades 3-5, ELA:

5 31.1% of grade 3 – 5 students across NYS met or exceeded the ELA proficiency standard.
56.3% of grade 3 – 5 students in the RCSD met or exceeded the ELA proficiency standard. 60% of Midland students in grades 3 – 5 met or exceeded the ELA proficiency standards. Rye City School District’s ELA proficiency compared to NYS and Westchester County

9 Shifts in Math Shift 1 Focus Teachers significantly narrow and deepen the scope of how time and energy is spent in the math classroom. Shift 2 Coherence Schools carefully connect the learning within and across grade levels so that students build new understanding onto the foundation built in previous years. Shift 3 Fluency Students are expected to have speed and accuracy with calculations. Shift 4 Deep Understanding Students develop a deep understanding of the math before moving on. Mastery. Shift 5 Application Students are expected to select the appropriate concept to solve a problem without prompting. Shift 6 Dual Intensity Students are practicing and understanding. 10 42.6% of grade 3 – 5 students across NYS met or exceeded the Math proficiency standard.

District Level: Continued PD with Literacy Consultant, Shelly Klein to improve reading instruction Mindshare among teachers within buildings and across the three elementary schools Building Level: Continue to provide data analysis to classroom teachers Maintain focus on teaching to the learning standards, specifically the anchor standards to improve instruction Research and provide individual and grade level PD opportunities through PNWBOCES and SWBOCES to address specific grade level needs Improve reading and writing stamina as well as develop test taking strategies Continuous Improvement
