Reading Reading journal book should be in school every day. Children to record their thoughts in their reading journal and the page they are on. Children can change the book when they are ready. The children bring books home at a level they can read confidently so they can focus on comprehension and understanding. Please use the questions sent home to help discuss the different texts they are reading at a deeper level. The children will be heard read in guided reading sessions every week. It is really important that the children read other books than their school reading book for example, library books, comics, e-books, poetry etc. There is not compulsory homework to go along with the children’s reading books, however they can pick a reading task to do in their journal if they wish to do so.

Home Learning English and Maths: English and Maths homework will be given out on a Monday and is due in on the following Monday. If the children finish their homework before the Monday deadline they are able to return it to school earlier. Children shouldn’t spend any longer than 20 minutes on each piece of homework. Please do not struggle with homework. If the children find things difficult then we want them to come and ask one of us. There is a homework club on a Tuesday lunchtime if the children wish to do some of it in school.

Home Learning Spellings The children will bring home a spellings in their spelling book on a Tuesday ready for a spelling test the following Tuesday. We would like them to practise the words daily. They should follow the “look, say, cover, write, check” method. The sheets are now stuck in their spelling books so it is less likely for the sheet to go missing. If children

Home Learning Mental Maths and Times Tables Times table tests and Mental Maths sessions will be on a Friday. We want the children to continue to learn and recap their multiplication tables and the related division calculations. They can use the laminated times table mats sent home and to write the division facts on with a whiteboard pen if they wish. We also want to encourage the children to keep practising their number bonds to 10, 20, 100 and 1,000 as this will help them with their mental arithmetic.

Trips We have a trip booked to the Winchester Science Centre in February. This is linked to our Earth, Moon and Space topic in the Spring term. We are also waiting to hear back from a company about a Viking workshop in school this term. More details to follow.
