UK Outreach update Peter Watkins (p.m.watkins@bham.ac.uk) Institute for Research in Schools

Institute for Research in Schools (IRIS) Supporting teachers with resources, training and kit so they can take part in authentic research projects in their schools Institute for Research in Schools

Aims of IRIS Nurture the potential and ability of young people to contribute to the scientific community Increase uptake of post 16 maths, science and technology courses Increase applications for STEM subjects at university, especially with girls Enhance teachers’ expertise and job satisfaction and so retain teachers and recruit more to the profession Engage Universities and Industry in sustained interaction with schools Develop soft skills of communication, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration Institute for Research in Schools

CERN@school CERN@school is a project based around schools having either a CERN@school kit in their labs or access to data from these detectors or both. A CERN@school kit is a silicon Timepix detector from CERN with a laptop and processing software. Its main aim is to inspire students and teachers using state of the art technology from CERN and the new research that students and teachers can develop using the kit and the data. Institute for Research in Schools

Associated projects - TimPix We are linking with British ESA Astronaut Tim Peake’s mission on the International Space Station. We are monitoring radiation the astronauts encounter whilst orbiting the Earth using Timepix data from chips on the ISS which comes to us from NASA. Institute for Research in Schools

The Langton Ultimate Cosmic ray Intensity Detector is on board TechDemoSat-1 – schools are using data from LUCID for analysis in a similar way to TimPix Associated projects - LUCID Institute for Research in Schools

LUCID data Institute for Research in Schools

So far having launched in March 2016 As of today we have 164 schools, many Universities and Industries signed up to IRIS Over 80 schools taking part in TimPix – resources on the website www.researchinschools.org www.researchinschools.org Training sessions being run for teachers on the chip and data handling New developments with putting chips on ships – CERN@sea! 13 STFC outreach summary Elizabeth Cunningham (STFC) Will be linked as usual to the IPPOG meeting agenda UK Masterclasses attendance - over 3500 students last year Analysis of teacher feedback from UK school visits to CERN in 2015

Feedback from teachers who organised UK school trips to CERN in 2015 (collected by Elizabeth Cunningham STFC)

My conclusions from reading the detailed feedback comments Role of CERN reception person is very important - should improve the cover on the desk to minimise delays. Simultaneous closure of Microcosm and Globe was very unfortunate. Should all visiting school groups be allowed in the restaurant? Standard visit is a little too short (Some groups would even like two half day visits on successive days) Many guides do a great job However Guides/lecturers need to be more aware of the age/knowledge level of their groups be competent in the language of the tour keep answers to questions short and at right level avoid over long talks on tours avoid duplicating topics already covered by other speakers
