5 Black Gold Oil Edwin L. Drake successfully used a steam engine to drill for oil. This made oil more accessible. (1859) Gasoline, made from refining oil, was at first thrown away. Later we used gas to power cars

6 Bessemer Steel Process Developed in 1850 By 1880 90% of manufacturers used this process Create quality steel from scrap metals and raw materials Guns, machines, bridges, railroads

7 New Uses for Steel Create barbed wire Farming equipment Bridges (Brooklyn Bridge) made out of steel cables Skyscrapers

8 Power of Electricity Thomas Edison set up the first world’s research laboratory. Light bulb; distributing electrical power Changed the nature of business – electric power ran machines, from fans to printing press – Electric street cars – People could locate their plants where ever they wanted to – not just near rivers

9 Inventions change lifestyles Typewriter – less work hours, more jobs for women Alexander Graham Bell created the telephone and led the way for a worldwide communications network Create factory jobs for work that had previously been done at home Many workers felt that machines reduced human worker’s worth Improved the standard of living Opened the door for more inventions and products

10 HW: Do you think consumers gained power as industry expanded in the late 19 th century? Why or why not? If the US had been poor in natural resources, how would industrialization have been effected? What invention or development described had the greatest impact on society?
