3. Getting Started Open up Microsoft Word. Go to File-Page Setup and where you see margins change the left, right, top and bottom to 1 inch; everything else should be set to zero. Looking at the tool bar: go to Format, Paragraph, and Line Spacing- choose double. Running head: see sample APA paper (check the handout-general section OR do a search on the Internet to see an example of an APA paper). Go to Insert- Header- type in APA FORMAT 1 If you have inserting the running head properly then it will automatically show up on the next page you go to. If this does not happen then you did NOT insert the running head properly. The title of your assignment should be centered. Since it’s your work it does not need to be underlined or italicized. (Since you should have double-spaced your work already you should have two lines for the title.) After the title on the next line type your name, next line type Sheepshead Bay High School.

4. Abstract Press Enter until you are on a new page. Abstract should be centered. You do not indent this but all other paragraphs should be indented. We will NOT use this part of the APA format but you need to know where it would be placed if we were going to use it.

5. The Report Press Enter until you are on a new page. Type the full title, APA Format and Their Effects on High-School Students in the Public Educational System, make sure it’s centered and bold. Spend 3 minutes practicing paraphrasing and using direct quotes (search the Internet for example of paraphrasing and/or using direct quotes if you have trouble) with the sample APA paper. For the purposes of this activity assume the paper was written in 2005 if you are looking at the sample on my webpage otherwise the date should be indicated in the example you found on the Internet.

6. References The References page is always the last page of your report make sure the word references in centered. Before you start typing, set up your page. Format-Paragraph- Indentation-Spacing-Special-.05. This will automatically indent your citations that are longer than one line. References should be centered. For this page only, for each citation that is more than one line, the second line will be indented. The References page is where you cite all of the sources you used in writing your paper. Citations are always in alphabetical order by author’s last name of if that’s unknown by the title of the work. Retype the first citation you see on the references page within the sample APA paper.
