Going all in!

We are called to commit to a different sort of life

“This is a prayer I often pray. Lord, I want to grow up before I grow old.” This is discipleship. A commitment to growing up! John Wimber: Founder of the Vineyard

Ephesians Ch 1-3: the beliefs of Christian life. Ephesians Ch 4-6: the practices of Christian life. 4:1 To live a life worthy of the calling I’ve received. Getting our goals & attitude right. 4:17-32 Christian maturity What happens when theology impacts real life.

17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to Ephesians 4: 17 - 32

sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed. 20 That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21 when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self,

which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. 25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbour, for we are all members of one body. 26 ‘In your anger

do not sin’: do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need. 29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of

your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Paul describes a life of contrasts. A before and after… A distinctiveness.

What distinctiveness isn’t..!

People notice lives that are distinctive. It’s attractive – think Velcro! People long for authenticity.

Sometimes this is uncomfortable. But we’re not to dilute our belief or modify our behaviour. We are called to distinctiveness not sameness.

Another theme: v1 I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. v17 no longer live as the Gentiles do… In Greek to live; a translation of to walk.

Maturing in our faith… Slow and steady progress in one direction.

Let’s be serious about this. Cue Routine Reward What’s your next step? Things to help… 1.Daily time with God.

Life is better in circles than straight lines! Maturity doesn’t happen so well or so quickly in isolation. What’s your next step? Things to help… 1.Daily time with God. 2.Fellowship is good for us.

Martin Luther c15 th There are three conversions necessary for the Christian life. The conversion of the heart, the mind and the wallet. What’s your next step? Things to help… 1.Daily time with God. 2.Fellowship is good for us. 3.Giving.

Get the right perspective. We put off the old self and put on the new… v22 - 24 There is action here – putting off and putting on. But it’s based in renewal brought about by Jesus. To be made new… created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Belong Believe Behave Maturity is born out of the knowledge & belief of what Jesus has done for us. v21 An encounter with the living God.

Don’t be a Christmas tree!

What’s your next step?

Going all in!
