OrthoData RFID Reader Development Capstone Project Proposal 12-29-09 Dr. Naber Confidential1

OrthoData Background Confidential2 Why Spinal Fusion is performed –Back trauma –Genetic defects –Spine disease –Aging Current Diagnostic Methods –X-ray, CT scans & Clinical diagnosis Majority of spinal fusions performed here

Problem Confidential3 40,000+ Exploratory surgeries $1.5 billion in cost Imaging systems don’t detect fusion

Solution Confidential4 ‣ OrthoData IntelliRod Diagnostics ‣ As spine fuses, rod strain  ‣ Detecting changes in load/strain quantitatively measures fusion. ‣ RFID and MEMS sensor technologies provide an accurate diagnostic. intelliRod Sensor

Confidential5 OrthoData Telemetry Background ASIC performs data conversion and outputs result to telemetry/power supply circuitry Telemetry/power supply circuitry converts carrier signal from the reader to DC to power the ASIC and also load modulates the data stream from the ASIC on to the carrier signal from the reader Reader provides inductive power to the ASIC, also detects data stream that has been modulated on to the carrier and outputs it to the data decoder Data decoder takes the raw, detected data stream from the reader, performs averaging on the data, and repackages it for output to a PC (currently by RS-232)

Confidential6 OrthoData Telemetry Background

Confidential7 Reader Block Diagram Custom FPGA Completed in FPGA Off-the-shelf Completed ECE 693 Project

Confidential8 Reader Block Descriptions RFID Reader Front-end –EM Microelectronic’s 4094 13.56Mhz Reader IC –Current Power Output = 200 mW –Demodulates tag data stream into digital stream ready for decoding RFID Front-end Programmer –Send configuration string to reader via SPI interface –Enable or disable RF Field –Adjust receiver gain level

Confidential9 Reader Block Descriptions Master Control –Main system state machine –Determines the status of all other sub-modules –Can enable or reset entire system –The reader “program” Stream Decoder –Accepts digital output of RFID front-end –Detects preamble bits –Decodes bit stream into identification, data and CRC strings –Pipeline design –Validates data and ID bits via 16 bit CRC –Frequency counter for calculating transmission/fixed oscillator frequency

Confidential10 Reader Block Descriptions Data Processor –32-bit floating point math functions Add Multiply Divide Convert floating point to/from fixed point –Control Modules + Math Modules –Internal programming for calculations and averaging –Calculates fixed oscillator frequency based on frequency counter –Calculates variable oscillator frequency based on tag data and the fixed oscillator frequency –Maintains a running average of samples for a pre-defined set size

Confidential11 Reader Block Descriptions Memory Controller –Interface to flash memory chip –SPI based –Organize and store data Animal # Tag # Position –Data can be recall for transmission by PC interface Flash Memory –16 Megabit –Non-volatile

Confidential12 Reader Block Descriptions PC Interface –Transfers completed samples/sample sets to a host PC for analysis/storage –Currently: 115200 baud serial connection –Future: USB connection LabVIEW User Application –Parses serial data from reader –Provides time stamp and text formatting functionality

Current Bench Test Set-up Confidential13

Capstone Project Tasks 1.Develop a uC interface for the reader LCD display and a USB port for loading data to a PC. –LCD menu should be controlled using a thumbwheel. 2.Develop flash card interface for the reader PCB. Leverage work from a previous 693 project. 3.Design a PCB that accommodates 1 & 2. 4.Create a housing for 1-2-3 above + antenna from Rapid Prototyping. 5.Develop an app for the iPhone or Android that will forward the reader data loaded on the PC to a cell phone.
