2 The Importance of Good Health  What is Health?  Health- well being of your body, mind, and relationships with others.  What is Quality of Life?  Quality of Life- degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life. Examples?  What is wellness?  Wellness- an overall state of well being, or total health.

3 The Health Continuum  Premature Death Loss of Health and Wellness Improved Health and Wellness  -------------|-------------   Chronic Disorders Lack of Energy, inattention, Aches & pains Free of aches and pains Moderate to Optimal Level of Energy  Left side-----------People on this side of the continuum usually do not take responsibility for maintaining their own health  Right side---------People on this side of the continuum usually exhibit a degree of responsibility, discipline and positive direction in life. They accept responsibility for maintaining their own health.

4 Prevention, Health Education?  What is prevention?  Prevention- practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury.  What is Health Education?  Health Education- providing accurate health information to help people make healthy choices.

5 Healthy People 2010  Healthy People 2010- is a nationwide promotion and disease prevention plan designed to serve as a guide for improving the health of all people in the U.S.  2 Main Goals  1. increase quality and years of a healthy life for all Americans and remove health differences that result from factors such as gender, race, education, disability, and location  2. work together as a community to meet goals

6 Health Literacy  What is health literacy?  Health literacy- a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services and use these resources to promote his or her health and wellness.  A health-literate individual needs to be: ---a critical thinker and problem solver ---a responsible, productive citizen ---a self-directed learner ---an effective communicator

7 The Health Triangle

8 The Health Triangle- Physical  Refers to how well your body functions.  Are you able to carry out everyday tasks?

9 The Health Triangle- Mental  Refers to how good you feel about yourself and how well you cope with day to day demands of your life.  Do you like yourself, learn from mistakes, relax, afraid to try new things?

10 The Health Triangle- Social  Refers to how well you get a long with others.  Do you have loving relationships, respect rights of others, give and accept help?

11 Influences on Your Health  Heredity ---family  Environment ---Physical Environment ---Social Environment (Peers)  Culture  Attitude  Behavior  Media  Technology

12 Risks   What are risky behaviors?  Risk behaviors- actions that can potentially threaten your health or health of others. ---safety belts? ---cigarettes? ---alcohol? ---drugs? ---sexual? * What are cumulative risks? * Cumulative risks- related risks that increase in effect with each added risk.

13 Abstinence????  What is abstinence?  Abstinence- avoiding harmful behaviors. “Abstain from………”  Tobacco  Alcohol  Drugs  Sex  The ONLY way to avoid consequences of some of the most serious risk behaviors is to practice ABSTINENCE!
