2 Mood  the way a story makes the reader feel; the atmosphere created by the author to stir up an emotion or feeling from the audience

3 Foreshadowing  a reference to the future; hints of what yet is to come

4 Theme  the central message of the story; often a general truth about life or human nature (in sentence format)

5 Setting  the time and place a story occurs  Setting may serve simply as a backdrop for the action of the story  Setting may be crucial to the outcome of the story.

7 Conflict  a struggle between opposing people or forces within the plot of a story; usually the main focus of a story

8 External Conflict  a character struggles against an outside (visible) force  Man vs. MAN  Man vs. NATURE  Man vs. SOCIETY/GROUP

9 Internal Conflict  a character struggles against himself/herself; often involves a personal decision or judgment  Man vs. HIMSELF/HERSELF

10 Protagonist  the main character who struggles against the conflict(s) in the story

11 Antagonist  the character or force that is opposing the protagonist

13 Flashback  a reference to the past; gives information about the events that already happened in relation to the story

15 Tone  the author’s attitude towards his/her audience and the subject matter; the author’s general attitude towards the world

16 First Person Narrator  the story is told by one of the characters in the story; this narrator uses pronouns like “I”, “me”, “we”, etc.

19 Omniscient  A type of third person narrator  the narrator knows the thoughts, feelings, words, and actions of ALL the characters in the story

20 Limited Omniscient  A type of third person narrator  the narrator knows the thoughts, feelings, words, and actions of only ONE character in the story
