2 Aims and Objectives of session  The aim of this session is for you to be able to develop an understanding of Codes of Practice and relate this to practice By the end of the session you will have  Researched various codes of practice  Summarised main points of health/Care codes of practice  Seen how values are engrained within codes of practice

3  It is essential that in order to promote the care values which various settings need to work within a framework of legislation and codes of practice  Organisations have codes of practice, policies and procedures to ensure that models of good practice are followed and that values of care are adheared to

4 What are codes of practice  Code of practice is a set of guidelines for a profession which sets down certain standards  These are standards which are laid down for people to follow for examples Social Care Code of Practice, or the Nursing Code of Professional Conduct

5 Code of Practice for social care  Sets out clear values which workers must follow  Include respect, confidentiality, trust

6 Policies  A formal policy outlines a statement from the agency, goals and the values of the agency in regards to the care value. Policies help organisations ensure that their working practice consider all the relevant issues. Organisations may have a general equal opportunities policy or more specific ones such as access or resources.

7  Organisations need to regularly evaluate how their policies and procedures are working and ensure that the policies are meeting their objective. Policies demonstrate the values associated with care and ensure that staff follow them.

8 Examples of Policies  Confidentiality  Equal Opps  Health and Safety  Admissions  Cultural Awareness

9  Why should be have Codes of Practice/ Codes of Conduct  Set down clear principles of the profession  Highlight to the public standards values  Ensure professions working to a common goal

10 Research  Using the computers carry out an internet search and find codes of practice for different organisations  For social Care www.gscc.org.uk  For nursing www.ukcc.org.uk

11  In small groups discuss what the common themes of the codes of practice are  Feedback your discussion to the larger group  In what ways did the Codes of practice/Codes of Conduct reflect care values

12 How codes of practice reflect social care values  Can ensure that service users are treated as an individual  That individual services users needs are met  Can highlight the importance of confidentiality  Highlight values associated with the profession  Minimise risk to the service user

13 Group work  Work in groups of 4 or 5  Each group will be given a specific setting  Using flipchart paper highlight issues which should be included in a group of practice  The exercise will take ten minutes  Group feedback

14 Summary  Codes of Practice are valuable in that they set out clear standards an principles for an organisation to follow  They set down clear guidelines for dealing with specific professional Issues  Discuss on placement whether the workers there are guided by a Code of Practice
