9 PICK YOUR MOST IMPORTANT REASON
I am picking Bucket #1 – Mecca was connected to many trade routes – As MY most important reason. If you think another reason is most important you can pick it.

10 5 PARAGRAPH ESSAY FORMAT
Introduction and Thesis Statement Information from Bucket #1 – Trade – Documents A & E Information from Bucket #2 – Surrounding Empires Were Weak – Documents A, C, D, & F Information from Bucket #3 – Fair Treatment of People – Documents B, E, & F Conclusion

11 INTRODUCTION / THESIS There are many reasons why Islam spread so quickly. First Mecca was connected to many global trade routes. Another important reason was their military conquered lots of territory. A third factor was the Muslims fair treatment of conquered peoples. While all three factors are important, it was Mecca’s connection to global trade routes that helped to spread the religion the most. RESTATED QUESTION 2nd par 3rd par 4th par 5th par & conclusion

12 Every Body Paragraph Should Be A PEP Paragraph

13 COMPONENTS OF A BODY (PEP) PARAGRAPH
Introduction / Topic Sentence Body Specific evidence from the documents that helps to answer the question. Conclusion

14 P = point/mini-thesis that supports the question
PARAGRAPHS NEED PEP! P = point/mini-thesis that supports the question You must show what part of the essay you are writing about in the first sentence. This can be copied WORD for WORD from your buckets, chicken foot, or the thesis paragraph. Introduction Read question carefully Circle words that tell them what to do Restate the question to form their point/thesis

15 E = Evidence to support your point What is evidence?
Paragraphs need pep! E = Evidence to support your point What is evidence? Evidence comes from the sources (documents). Make sure you cite (Doc A), (Doc B) for every sentence that has evidence in it. Body Text based evidence, vocabulary, class discussion, etc. For us it will be assignment specific – based on what the teacher wants to evaluate/assess

16 PARAGRAPHS NEED PEP! P = prove your point explain how the evidence you offered proves/explains/analyzes/ or enhances your point/mini-thesis. Conclusion

17 P = point/MINI-thesis that supports the question
Mecca was connected to many global trade routes.

18 E = Evidence to support your point
Many pilgrims traveled to Mecca to pray at the Ka’ba (Doc A). They traveled with merchants who traded spices, perfumes, precious metals, ivory, and silk (Doc A). These goods came from as far away as Africa, India, and China (Map Doc A). Muhammad converted the Ka’ba from polytheistic to monotheistic and instructed Muslims to make pilgrimages to Mecca (Class Notes). After Muhammad’s death, caliphs ensured the trade routes were safe and protected (Doc E #3).

19 P = prove your point Mecca’s important location as a center of trade allowed Islam to spread quickly to many distant lands.

20 Putting it ALL Together

21 Mecca was connected to many global trade routes
Mecca was connected to many global trade routes. Mecca’s important location as a center of trade allowed Islam to spread quickly to many distant lands.

22 Finish the Rest on Your Own
You have two more Body (PEP) Paragraphs and the conclusion to write on your own. Each Body (PEP) Paragraph must follow the above format. Use the sentences from your thesis to start each Body (PEP) Paragraph. Your conclusion should summarize your main ideas. Tell why the other factors are not as important Prove why trade (or your choice) is the most important.

23 CONCLUSION While all three factors are important, it was Mecca’s connection to global trade routes that helped to spread the religion the most. It’s central location allowed the city to be a hub for the religion to spread to far away regions. The military conquered more territory and brought more trade routes under their control. As the Muslim’s territory and trade routes grew, many people began to favor Muslim rule because of their fair and equal legal system. When new territory was added the trade routes were protected and kept secure. This security then encouraged new people to convert creating a large and diverse Islamic Empire. Without trade Islam would have remained a local religion and never left the Arabian Peninsula.
