4 What is Politics? Politics refers to the nature, distribution and dynamics of private and public forms of power. Who has the power? Where it originates? Who wants it? POWER: is a form of relation between actors, the institutions or people, in economic, political and social spheres, and involves a real or perceived ability to change or influence activity, behavior and preferences. From this perspective, politics is about diversity and conflict, but the essential ingredient is the existence of scarcity: the simple fact that, while human needs and desires are infinite, the resources available to satisfy them are always limited. 13 The basics of political science Legitimacy, sovereignty authority are basic to political science. Legitimacy - mass feeling that the government’s rule is rightful and should be obeyed. Sovereignty – a national government being boss on it’s own law in that country. Authority – political leaders’ ability to command respect and exercise power.
