Grades: K-12 Abstract: This lesson is design… Objectives: Student will 1.Develop… 2.Describe… 3.Gain… 4.Apply… 5.Develop…

Bottle Water Facts  2008 ranked U.S. 2 nd largest-beverage  2000 consumption 16.7 gallons per person  2008 consumption 28.5 gallons per person  2008 global estimated consumption 53 billion gallons Source: Beverage Marketing Corporation, 2009

Bottle Water Facts  Most come from Ground water source.  Surface water source  Springs  Wells Source: Environmental Protection Agency. 2006 Tap Water Facts  Ground water  Community/Municipal System  Private Ground Water Well Source: Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008

Bottle Water Facts  Artesian Water  Mineral Water  Purified Water  Spring Water  Sparkling Bottle Water Source: Food and Drug Admininstration, 2002

Bottle Water Regulations Tap Water Regulations

Bottle Water Facts  FDA regulates bottle water  Regulations on bottle water labels  Establish Current Good Manufacturing Practices  Standard of Identity Source: FDA, 2002

Bottle Water Facts  EPA regulates tap water  Regulates production  Regulates distribution  Regulates quality of water  Regulates water protection  Report water operations : Contaminant levels Reporting requirements Source: EPA, 2002

Let’s Get Ready to Learn Round Three Does Bottle Water Pose a Threat to the Environment? Environmental Issues  An estimated 13% of bottle water is recycled in the U.S.  Approximately 90% of plastic bottle water becomes liter or garbage.  In 2005 2 million tons of bottle water were put in landfills.  Plastic bottle water are produce by petroleum oil.  The manufacturing and transporting of bottle water causes pollution in the air and the in water supply.  2 billion half-liter bottle water was shipped to US ports in 2006, causing thousands of tons of global warming pollution and air pollution. Sources: NRDC, 2007 & NYSDEC, 2007

Does Plastic Bottle Water Pose a Threat to our Health ? Health Risk  The Cap or liner of plastic bottle could cause health problems.  High level of chemicals are contained in some of the water from bottle water.  Contaminants consume by the sensitive population could pose a health threat. Source: NRDC, 2007 & EPA, 2003

What can I do to help with the improvement (s) on the safety of bottle water?

 Letters to Congress, FDA, or Governor.  Purchase re-usable bottle water.  Recycle plastic bottle water.  Ask parents to buy a filter for home tap water.  Most importantly, Know Your Water Status! Bottle or Tap

Tune In For the Result! VS.

BOTTLE WATERTAP WATER  FDA Regulate  Contaminants Not Checked Regularly  FDA does not require water testing by certified labs.  FDA is not required to report violation of water quality.  Fluoride may or may not be present in water  Use in a National Disaster  Threat to environment Source: FDA, 2003  EPA Regulate  Contaminants Check Regularly  EPA require water testing by certified labs.  EPA is required to report violation of water quality.  Fluoride present in water  Cannot consume in a National Disaster Source: EPA, 2002

After five rounds of information the Healthier Source of Water is…

 The safety issues surrounding bottle water was addressed on how it could pose a threat to the environment and our health. Obj. 1 & 3  Information was provided on the actions of improving bottle water. Obj. 4  The regulations on bottle and tap water was discussed in how they could obtain further information. Obj. 5  A description for bottle water and tap water was provided. Obj. 2  The two were compared to see which one pose more of a risk factor. Obj. 2 The End
