Tenths Ones 0.1 Let’s review the places and the values of decimal numbers. 1 Hundredths 0.010.001 Thousandths Decimal Number Place Values. Decimal Point Ones

What is a decimal? ◦ A decimal is less than one whole. ◦ Decimal numbers are found on the right side of the decimal point. ◦ They end in the letters “ths”. ◦ Think about money: If you only have some change (like 43), you do not have 1 whole dollar.

Decimal Poem Reading decimals is easy, you’ll see! They have two names, like you and me. First, you say the name as if there were no dot. Then you say the name of the last place value spot! ◦ Example: 0.27 ◦ First name = twenty-seven ◦ Last name = hundredths

What is a decimal? The picture above shows one tenth and one hundredth colored in to help us visualize what that looks like.

◦ Standard form is the normal way to write a number using digits. ◦ If there is a place value spot with a missing value, use a 0 to hold its spot. 456.27 Standard Form
