Final Exams A Survival Guide

Get organized! Locate and organize all notes, handouts, homework, quizzes, tests, etc. Check the website, wiki, or portal. Do a large-scale review of everything and write down questions on anything you do not understand.

Schedule study time. Plan your exam preparation! Start this weekend. Start with short study sessions and then lengthen them as exam day approaches. Ask for extra help if you need it. Attend after-school review sessions. Take notes and ask questions! Do not “cram.”

Listen in class! It’s important if your teacher… Says something more than once. Writes material on the board. Pauses to review notes. Asks questions of the class. Says something like, “This is important!” or “This will be on the test!”

Take notes in class. Keep alert and pay attention. Listen for key words. Note any major conclusions. Note anything the teacher gives special emphasis to.

Read actively in English! Read actively and annotate. Look for important themes, issues, ideas, and symbols. Review important passages. Review plot, main characters, setting, and so on. Note anything that has been emphasized.

Practice in English! Review all notes. Use your vocabulary words. Practice grammar and mechanics. Study literary and poetry terms. Review MLA. Read and enjoy poetry. Think critically. Use the wiki.

Is this you?

Then you need to get to this.

Practice in Algebra! Attend extra help sessions. Start a review notebook. Do all examples, neatly. Ask questions. Complete the whole study guide. Take advantage of all opportunities to learn. Listen-you never know when something will be said that helps you!

Learn by Doing! Algebra, and Mathematics are learned by doing… So, the more you do, the better you will know the material. It is not a time to try to memorize. Understanding will last and help when memorizing fails!

Practice in Spanish & French! Use flash cards for vocabulary. Practice writing the words. Create and study verb charts. Be sure to group like- verbs together! Use your text book and all the online resources your teacher has made available like classzone.com. Use Take Home Tutor and focus on vocabulary and grammar that was challenging the first time around. Review old tests and quizzes and focus on the errors. Make sure you understand your mistakes and your corrections. Make notes to yourself as you review and bring your questions to class.

Use the study guide. Begin right away and complete the study guide as soon as possible. Write down questions to ask your teacher for material that you cannot find or do not understand.

Create study aids. Flash cards Timelines Charts Mnemonics Posters

Create a good study environment. Quiet, well-lit, and lots of space for your materials. No distractions like TV, IM, internet, etc. Take occasional short breaks and move around. Don’t try to study with a friend if you know it won’t be productive.

Take care of yourself. Get plenty of sleep. Eat regular meals that are good in nutrition. Snack healthy. Get plenty of exercise. Take time to relax and de-stress!

And on exam day... Read all directions carefully. Look over the whole test first. Budget your time. Read each question twice before answering it. Note key words in each question and answer each question thoroughly. Think before you write. Answer easiest questions first. Review your test before handing it in.
