5 Steps of the Scientific Method Problem/Question 1. Problem/Question: Develop a question or problem that can be solved through an experiment. If the question is based on opinions or personal preferences, then it is not testable.

6 Read each research question below. State if the question is testable or not. 1) Does the amount of fertilizer affect how tall a flower grows? Yes 2) Are roses prettier flowers than tulips? No-opinion 3) Do daffodils smell better than carnations? No-opinion 4) Can daises grow in different types of soil? Yes

7 Steps of the Scientific Method Observation/Research 2. Observation/Research: Make observations (qualitative & quantitative) and research your topic of interest.

8 Qualitative Observations Deals with descriptions. Data can be observed but NOT measured. Colors, textures, smells, tastes, appearance, beauty, etc. Qualitative → Quality

9 Quantitative Observations Deals with numbers. Data which CAN BE measured. Length, height, area, volume, weight, speed, time, temperature, humidity, sound levels, cost, members, ages, etc. QuaNtitative → QuaNity….N=numbers

10 Example of Qualitative & Quantitative Vanilla Latte: Qualitative: *Quantitative: –Vanilla flavor -- 12 oz. Latte –Sugar -- Serving Temp. 90 degrees –Strong smell -- 10 grams of sugar –Hot -- Cost: $4.95 –Plastic Cup

11 Steps of the Scientific Method Formulate a Hypothesis 3. Formulate a Hypothesis: Predict a possible answer to the problem or question. (If, Then Statements) Example: If soil temperatures rise, then plant growth will increase.

12 Now You Try! Raise your hand and state a hypothesis using the IF, THEN statement. 1)What effect does light have on plant growth? --If plants have more light, then they will grow bigger. 2)Does chocolate cause pimples? --If people eat more chocolate, then the amount of pimples will increase on their body. 3)Which lunch will give me more energy, chicken sandwich or pizza? --If I ate a chicken sandwich, then I will have more energy because chicken has protein.

13 Variables A variable is any factor that can be controlled, changed, or measured. An experiment usually has three kinds of variables: –1. Independent Variable –2. Dependent Variable –3. Controlled Group

14 Independent Variable The independent, or manipulated variable, is one thing you change in your experiment. Example: The amount of water added to a plant

15 Dependent Variable The dependent, or responding variable, is something that might be affected by the change in the independent variable –What is observed –What is measured –The data collected during the investigation -In this example, it would be the size the plant grows.

16 Control Group -T he group that DOES NOT change. -You use this to compare what happened to the other groups. Ex: Same time of plants, same setting

17 Steps of the Scientific Method Experiment 4. Experiment: Develop and follow a procedure. Include a detailed materials list. The outcome must be measurable (quantifiable).

18 Steps of the Scientific Method Collect and Analyze Results 5. Collect and Analyze Results: Modify the procedure if needed. Confirm the results by retesting. Include tables, graphs, and photographs.

19 Steps of the Scientific Method Conclusion 6. Conclusion: Include a statement that accepts or rejects the hypothesis. Make recommendations for further study and possible improvements to the procedure.

20 Steps of the Scientific Method Communicate the Results 7. Communicate the Results: Be prepared to present the project to an audience. Expect questions from the audience.
