2 Background: Food Insecurity at UC San Diego Food Insecurity is the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. Data: UC Undergraduate Experience Survey and student stories Why are UCSD students food insecure? What populations are most impacted? Who is responsible for addressing food insecurity?

3 Responding to the Issue Concerned Administrators Involvement of Student Leaders System-wide UC Committee on Food Access and Security Campus Food Insecurity Working Group Membership Dean of Student Affairs, University Centers, Financial Aid, Student Health, Housing & Dining, Associated Students, Institutional Research

4 Developing the Triton Food Pantry Identifying a space: Original Student Center Food Source: San Diego Food Bank Funding: VCSA and AS, UC Office of the President, and fundraising Marketing: Emails, Presentations, tabling, educating student leaders

5 Pantry Operations Any registered undergraduate or graduate student can use the pantry Recording PIDs via campus scanning system Students visit 1x per week Food is allocated on a point system Operated by paid student managers and unpaid volunteers

6 Challenges Policy: Navigating approval process for space, food, and donations Staff : Currently working on securing funding for a Full Time Employee for Food Security/Basic Needs Nutrition : How do we maximize limited funding while also ensuring options are nutritious? Transitioning Conversation: Evolving conversation from Food Pantry to Food Security to Basic Needs
