The Two Covenants in Your Bible Jeremiah 31:31-34

31 Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more. Jer. 31:31-34

Key Verses Showing These Truths

Heb. 1:1-2; 2:1-4

1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; Heb. 1:1-2

1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will? Heb. 2:1-4

Key Verses Showing These Truths Heb. 1:1-2; 2:1-4 Jer. 31:31-34; Heb. 8:7-12

Jer. 31:31-34

7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. 8 Because finding fault with them, He says: "Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not regard them, says the Lord.... 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” Heb. 8:7-12

The Covenant Made Exiting Egypt Deut. 4:13

13 So He declared to you His covenant which He commanded you to perform, the Ten Commandments; and He wrote them on two tablets of stone. Deut. 4:13

The Covenant Made Exiting Egypt Deut. 4:13 1 Kings 8:9, 20-21

9 Nothing was in the ark except the two tablets of stone which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.... 20 So the LORD has fulfilled His word which He spoke; and I have filled the position of my father David, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised; and I have built a temple for the name of the LORD God of Israel. 21 And there I have made a place for the ark, in which is the covenant of the LORD which He made with our fathers, when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. 1 Kings 8:9, 20-21

The Covenant Made Exiting Egypt Deut. 4:13 1 Kings 8:9, 20-21 2 Chron. 5:10

10 Nothing was in the ark except the two tablets which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they had come out of Egypt. 2 Chron. 5:10

Key Verses Showing These Truths Heb. 1:1-2; 2:1-4 Jer. 31:31-34; Heb. 8:7-12 Rom. 7:1-7

2 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. 4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.... Rom. 7:1-4

6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter. 7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, "You shall not covet." Rom. 7:6-7

Key Verses Showing These Truths Heb. 1:1-2; 2:1-4 Jer. 31:31-34; Heb. 8:7-12 Rom. 7:1-7 Heb. 3-4

1500 B.C. --- Moses’ Generation 10 Therefore I was angry with that generation and said, “They always go astray in their heart, and they have not know My ways.” 11 So I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter My rest.”Heb. 3:10-11

1500 B.C. --- Moses’ Generation 10 Therefore I was angry with that generation and said, “They always go astray in their heart, and they have not know My ways.” 11 So I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter My rest.”Heb. 3:10-11 1450 B.C. --- Joshua’s Generation (Note: Joshua’s generation had the land and Sabbath) 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. Heb. 4:8

Heb. 4:8 1000 B.C. --- David’s Generation Psalm 95:7-11 – David told them there was another day!

1500 B.C. --- Moses’ Generation 1450 B.C. --- Joshua’s Generation 1000 B.C. --- David’s Generation 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. 9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. 11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. Heb. 4:8-11
