 If the denominators are already the same, then you’re ready to add or subtract.  Add or subtract the numerators. Keep the denominators the same.  Simplify (reduce) the fraction, if possible.  If you end up with an improper fraction, change it to a mixed number.

1 5 + 2 5 = 3 5 This answer cannot be reduced any further.

9 14 5 = 4 The GCF of 4 and 14 is 2, so we divide by 2 to reduce. ÷ 2 = 2 7

8 9 + 3 9 = 11 9 This is an improper fraction (the top is bigger than the bottom), so we want to change it to a mixed number. To do this, divide the bottom into the top. 911 1 9 2 Answer: 1 2 9

Addition of mixed numbers with like denominators. If James has two and one eighth pizzas and Jane has two and five eighths pizzas, how many pizza’s do they have together. 2 1/8 + 2 5/8 Step 1: Add the Fractions 1/8 + 5/8 6/8 Step 2: Add the whole numbers 2+2=4Step 3: Combine the whole number and the fraction. 4

7 12 5 = 4 7 + 1 7 = 8 15 + 12 15 = 1 6 5 7 1 1 3
