Correcting an Image Photoshop CS Style

Few images are ready to use directly from the camera. You will need to edit all photos (when applicable) before you place them on your layout. Most photos will need to be edited in Photoshop by changing the coloring and cropping out unwanted space from the picture. Here are two easy steps that will help guarantee that our yearbook demonstrates good photo content, strong composition, and maintains high print quality.

First Things First  Load your image into Photoshop

Check the image?  Does it need to be cropped or color corrected? YES

Deciding Where to Crop  Dividing the image area into thirds vertically and horizontally guides the placement of the main subject.  Where the lines intersect, visual “hot spots” are created. By striving to have the subject fall in a hot spot, a more dynamic photo results  Avoid centering a subject in the center boxes of the grid. This makes the photo appear more natural, and less posed.

Before & After  Before: After: Note this “blank space”. It serves no purpose and can be cropped out of the photo.

Color Correcting  Do’s and Don'ts –Don’t over use color correcting –Judge the image before attempting to correct it. –Duplicate the layer in case you don’t like your changes. –Save the changed image before attempting to “ImageIn” it onto your spread.

Color Correcting  In PhotoShop, open up the photo that needs correcting. Click layer menu and duplicate layer.

Color Correcting  To correct the image, go to image adjustments and levels. A window will appear where you will select the third eye dropper. Select an area on the image that You believe is pure white and drag the eye dropper to that point. This will bring out the natural whites so the picture will seem more vibrant..

Before and After  Before After As you can see, by both cropping and lightening the image, the subjects of the photo come to life.

No it is your turn…. Choose a photo from the file provided by your advisor and complete the following tasks: 1.) Applying the rule of thirds; crop the photo and edit out any unwanted space. 2.) Adjust the coloring of the image by adjusting the natural white of the photo. 3.) Save the photo in the file under your name after sharing the changed image with your advisor.
