7 The Tigris and Euphrates Rivers Chapter Three Lesson One

8 LOCATION  Located in the present- day country of Iraq  Located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers  It was approximately 300 miles long and 150 miles wide

9 PLACE  Northern Mesopotamia is made up of hills and plains  The land is quite fertile due to seasonal rains, and the rivers and streams flowing from the mountains.  Southern Mesopotamia is made up of marshy areas and wide, flat, barren plains

10 The Land Between Two Rivers  Mesopotamia is located between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.  Called the “Fertile Crescent” for rich farmland.  The first settlers were farmers and fisherman.

11 Working With Water  Flooding provided silt, a rich mixture of rock and soil.  Silt made the nearby land possible to farm.  Drought or times without rain made farming difficult.  Irregular flooding and droughts caused Mesopotamians to find was of getting water to their fields. This was Irrigation.

13 Farming in Mesopotamia  Crops –Wheat –Barley –Emmer (Wheat grain)  Vegetables and Fruits –Onions –Cucumbers –Figs –Apples  Raised Animals to help out. –Goats, sheep, horses donkeys.
