14-19 Reform Changes in legislation & structure –Increased compulsory participation age –New range of learning pathways

83 secondary schools 9 FE Colleges 90,000+ students Estimate of 25% take up of diplomas Potential 4 trips per student per week Approx 23,000 students on a diploma For 35 weeks per year Scale of the issue Approx 3.2 million extra trips per year =

In reality: Some trips can be made by cycling or walking. Some trips will simply replace one which would otherwise be made. i.e. direct to host establishment instead of home school. Some trips will be absorbed by existing public and school transport network at minimal cost. But many will require additional provision at significant cost.

“Ball park” figure! Assume 50% of 3.2million predicted trips incur additional cost At average of £2.50 per trip per head. Comes to over £4 million

Other issues Responsibility –Personal security –Road safety Transient population –Will change year on year Rural areas

Access to Learning Cost of travel Time Distance Convenience SEN
