8. In the early-mid 1800’s, many black people (African Americans) came to Canada from the USA as escaped slaves, but there were already many living here.

10. Many people from Ireland came to Canada in the mid 1800’s to escape the great potato famine.

11. The first immigrants from China to Canada came to the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush in British Columbia, beginning in 1858. The Chinese were a significant part of nearly all the British Columbia gold rushes and most towns in BC had large Chinese populations, often a third of the total or more.

12. The second wave of Chinese immigrants came to Canada to work on the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1870’s.

14. Over the early to mid 1900’s Canada received many immigrants from central European countries such as the Ukraine.

15. Immigration since the 1970s has overwhelmingly been of visible minorities from the developing world.

17. Protects Canadian’s rights to practice their own culture and beliefs.

18. Canada's cultural diversity also creates an environment much more accepting of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered) people than one finds in the United States or most other countries. Canada has always placed emphasis on equality and inclusiveness for all people.

19. Maillardville is a community in Coquitlam where many French people first settled.

20. Chinatown in Vancouver is North America’s second largest Chinatown in area (after San Francisco), and third largest in population (after San Francisco and New York City).

21. The Americans have what is called a “Melting Pot” view of Immigration. People moving into the USA are expected to become like the Americans. In Canada, people can keep their own cultures.

22. We become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.
