1 Students will distinguish between the various groups who controlled the Fertile Crescent after Babylon fell and create a timeline using source documents to list who ruled Mesopotamia at various times.

2 Warm Up: Analyze: Why was it important for Hammurabi to be both a skilled leader on the battle field and a smart manager of laws?

3 Homework Read pages 148-153 define the 4 key terms and places AND answer questions 1-3 all parts.

4 Bye, Bye Babylon Soon after the death of Hammurabi the once great city of Babylon declined in power.

5 Copy Cats Influenced by Babylon and other Sumerian civilizations various other civilizations developed around the outside area of the Fertile Crescent.

8 Chaldeans (612BC) Took advantage of Assyrians after they had fought a series of long wars Major contributions to astronomy and how the stars moved through the sky Kept political records Kept log of the weather Developed and solved complex geometry problems

9 Phoenicians Largely urban based people Most of their trade was based on cedar wood (very strong and water resistant) Bordered by mountains and hostile enemies had to use water routes for trade Silverwork and ivory also major trade items

11 Work Time: In your groups discuss and answer the leveled question assigned to your group Group A: Why do you think the development of iron work led to the down fall of Babylon? Group B: Where do we see influences of Assyrian society in our present day society? Group C: The development of the first alphabet led to the creation of many plays, stories and other arts. What connections can be made between the creation of an alphabet and an increase in creative works.
