Systems Stem Meeting Vijay Vittal PS ERC Industrial Advisory Board Meeting May 18-20, 2005

PS ERC 2 Planning Exercise for Next Year’s Projects (The first few slides are from the Berkeley Meeting) I will give you a listing of current projects, projects awaiting funding, and the priority list generated at the 2004 Workshop. I would like to solicit inputs to decide whether to retain some of the priorities generated last year and not funded, and obtain new ideas for projects.

PS ERC 9 Action Items Please go over the priority list and decide if you still want some of the project areas to be addressed this year. Prepare short presentation on new projects you would like to be considered.

PS ERC 10 Ideas from Berkeley Meeting An additional comment that was made at the Berkeley meeting was that some of the areas identified and not addressed in last year’s round of solicitations were very important. As a result more funding was needed for this stem.

PS ERC 11 Ideas from Berkeley Meeting Wide area grid control Reactive power planning – Need more specifics on this. Determine when you need load shedding instead of when you need UVLS Distributed state estimation is very important

PS ERC 12 Ideas from Berkeley Meeting Data handling – How do you deal with large amounts of data? Examine self configuring IEDs. How do you reduce data requirement to save man power? Large scale energy storage – What is its impact on reliability of the grid? Need a modeling and feasibility demo.

PS ERC 13 Ideas from Berkeley Meeting Reliability impact of wind and other distributed resources needs to be studied. There is need for closer cooperation and integration between system operation and market operation. Modeling of super conducting cables and fault current limiters and analysis of system performance.

PS ERC 14 Ideas from Berkeley Meeting Impact of wind generation on market outcome. Market impact of penetration needs to be addressed. Another area that is important is distributed intelligence – This needs further elaboration. There was not much in my notes beyond this one sentence.

PS ERC 15 Ideas from Berkeley Meeting Load modeling including dynamic behavior is important. Need new improvements. Automating secondary and tertiary voltage control support for operator is critical. System wide model identification and verification should be pursued. Use system wide data to see if this would be helpful rather than the use of component data.

PS ERC 16 Ideas from Berkeley Meeting Sustainability of the electric supply – This is a topic of multidisciplinary study. Need for much larger models for the network. Also need more on- line validation. State estimation results needed in 10s.

PS ERC 17 Ideas from Berkeley Meeting Topology processing should include power flow models with all devices in it. In large systems, scalability issue is a challenge and projects should look at decomposition approaches and examine how these can be successfully applied. Large scale state estimation does not automatically feedback into AGC and other network function. Operator intervention is needed for it to be included.

PS ERC 18 Ideas from Wichita Meeting Interaction of power electronic controls on the system need to be studied. Implications of renewable portfolio standards on system performance. Project based on recommendations of project S-21 – further development of screening tool.
