2 SELECTIVE SERVICE ACT (1917) Selective Service-a new government agency in charge of drafting men into military “Doughboys” a nickname for American soldiers, were largely inexperienced, but they were fresh, so their presence boosted the morale of Allied forces.

3 WAR INEQUALITIES Women-were not allowed in military except as nurses. Minorities-forced to serve in segregated units during war

4 WAR AT HOME War Industries Board-government agency that made sure factories were making enough military supplies It was the responsibility of WIB to increase the production of necessary material and decrease the production of unnecessary material during war. Food Administration-a government agency that encouraged Americans to not waste food and to plant victory gardens

5 WAR AT HOME The Committee of Public Information-a government agency that used propaganda to build support for the war The government made it illegal to spy or speak harmfully against the war effort.

6 WAR AT HOME Espionage Act of 1917, which established penalties and prison terms for anyone who gave aid to the enemy. This act also penalized disloyalty, giving false reports, or otherwise interfering with the war effort. The Sedition Act of 1918 expanded the meaning of the Espionage Act to make it illegal for any ay public expression of opposition to the war. It allowed officials to prosecute anyone who criticized the president or the government.

7 WAR AT HOME The constitutionality of the espionage and sedition acts were tested in the Supreme Court Case: Schenck v U.S. Supreme Court said government could limit freedom of speech during national crisis

8 WAR AT HOME The U.S. Paid for this war by raising taxes and selling war bonds. War bonds- Americans were loaning money to the government. The gov’t agreed to repay the money with interest in a specified number of years.

9 WAR AT HOME 18 th Amendment- made alcohol illegal (prohibition)

10 WAR AT HOME Great Migration-movement of black Americans from the south to the north during WWI because factory jobs available in urban cities Encouraged by recruiting agents promising high wages and plentiful work, between 300,00-500,000 African Americans left the South to settle in Northern cities. It greatly altered the racial makeup of such cities as Chicago, New York, Cleveland, and Detroit.

11 WAR AT HOME American army-began fighting in the summer of 1917, but it was not until 1918 that it made a real difference

12 THE DECIDING POWER a nickname for the U.S. army in WWI because the U.S. army were able to break the stalemate and help overrun the Germans
