This info will go on…. “Principles” of notebook.

Your assignment…. Please take nearly 1 page of notes.

Chapter 21: Civil Rights Our Plan…. 1- What are principles? 2- Why are they important? 3- What impact do they have on us and our world? 4- What are (3) Principles you live by? 5-What would you be willing to do to make sure those principles were up held?

According to the dictionary…. Principles are: Def. 1: accepted or professed rule of action or conduct, ethical or moral principles Def. 2: a fundamental, primary, or general law or truth

What are principles? Let’s define PRINCIPLES. What do you think they are? I think of them as words to live by. These are words that may guide how you live your life. When you have to make a very difficult decision, you may rely on these words. These could be your core values or basic beliefs

What are principles? Sometimes these are the words that define people. Do you remind yourself of something every day? Or remind yourself to do something every day. That’s probably a principle. Do you have a long term goal that you work toward or think about every day? That goal is probably based on a principle.

Let’s write some examples on the board….. The Ten Commandments Don’t steal, keep promises, don’t cheat play fair, be honest, all people are equal I am devoted to my family, bullying is wrong, relationships are important you can choose your attitude, be positive— but don’t get walked on, Eat, exercise, limit alcohol, don’t smoke

More Principles…. Respectforgivenesshonesty Faithgratitudehumility Integritycourageself-respect Compassionoptimismgenerosity Enthusiasmappreciationconfidence Moderationeffortendurance Tolerancedeterminationcreativity Obediencepurityfaith

Your assignment…. Write down your top five important principles.  Label them “My top five principles.”

How far would you go to support your principles? Discuss. Do you believe very strongly in all your principles? Are some principles more important than others? Would you put yourself at risk for your values, even if you had nothing to gain?

Your 2 nd assignment….. Write down 1 principle you believe in. Write 1 statement telling how far you’d go to support that principle. Example: I believe in the principle (of) ______. To show my belief in _____, I would _________________.

It seems to me that…. By examining our own principles, we should be able to get a better idea of the greatness of some of the individuals we will study in the Civil Rights chapter. But much more importantly……….

What will the study of the Civil Rights Era be for you? A study of people, dates, and events OR

What will the study of the Civil Rights Era be for you? A study of people who stuck to their principles in TIMES OF CRISIS, when it was UNPOPULAR, UNCOMFORTABLE and often SOCIALLY AND PHYSICALLY DANGEROUS OR

What will the study of the Civil Rights Era be for you? A time to REFLECT ON OUR OWN PRINCIPLES and HOW THESE PRINCIPLES WILL SHAPE OUR LIVES

It will be my focus and it is my hope that…… As we learn about a pivotal time in our history, we will also: reflect (think about) on our own principles Think about how principles will determine your present and future When people stand up for their principles it will not always be easy, but it defines them (it’s who and what they are)
