7. 1 Pattern Visual Research Think carefully about your class work exploring pattern and nature. Research on the internet, in magazines and books to find pictures of pattern in nature, using your mind map to help you. Present on a double page in your sketch book. You should have at least 10 good quality images of different patterns, sized at 4 to a page. These should be close up images featuring patterns that you think are interesting. 9. Today you are going to complete a series of observational Line Drawings, exploring the visual research you gathered for your homework. A line drawing is a drawing using only line, no tone. We are using line drawings as the are good for exploring shape, texture, pattern by picking out fine details of an object.

10. Draw 4 equally sized boxes on a page in your in your book (or on a separate page of A4 paper if you cannot see you images while you draw the boxes ) 1)Start by planning out your drawing. Press really lightly with your pencil at this point. Plan out the position, size and basic shape first. 2)When you are happy with the position, size and basic shape you can start adding details. 3)Only press harder when you are happy with the accuracy of your lines.

28. What makes for a successful pattern design? What would you expect to see?

29. Today we are going to begin designing a pattern of our own. To do this successfully you need to carefully follow a series of steps.

30. 1)Select the most successful drawing from your previous lesson. 2)Use the tile on your desk to draw a rectangle in the centre of your piece of paper. 3)Draw your chosen line drawing in the centre of your rectangle. 4)Think about how you could begin to turn this drawing into a pattern design, using your designer to help you. Consider varying the following things Line Simplification Positioning of objects Repetition Detail

31. Creating Repeating Patterns 1)Cut your image in half down the middle 2)Stick your picture back together by attaching the opposite ends. It may help you to label the different ends of your paper. 3)Develop detail and pattern across the join that you have just stuck together. 4)By the time you have finished it should look like a seamless join between A and D. 3)Complete this process in the opposite direction. 32. 3 Material Resourcing Carefully consider how you can use background colour and texture to inform your print. Resource materials to use to print your design onto, which you feel will enhance your work, and build connections between your work and that of your designer. Bring these materials to your next lesson. 33. To transfer your pattern successfully you need to follow these steps very carefully: 1)Trace off your pattern onto the tracing paper provided 2) Transfer the tracing to your press print tile 3) Go back over your line. Consider using different tools to achieve different widths of line.

34. Printing your tiles. Think very carefully about the colour of printing ink you are using and what colour paper/ material you are working on. Your prints will be more successful if you really consider your use of colour, so make sure you think about: Contrast Complimentary colour Harmonious colour
