16-2 Metals What is the name of a metal that you see everyday?

Where are metals located? Most metals are located to the left of the zigzag line in the Periodic Table of Elements.

What are some physical properties of metals? Hardness Shininess Malleability (pounded into shapes) Ductility (pulled out into long wires) Good conductors of heat and cold Magnetic Solids at room temperature -except mercury, Hg (liquid) High melting point

Name that metal - Name a metal that is -hard -shiny -malleable -ductile -magnetic

What are chemical properties of metals? Reactivity-Some metals are very reactive ( sodium) and they are located on the left side of the periodic table. Some metals do not react easily ( gold). How do reactive metals behave? S O D I U M

What is an alloy? An alloy is a mixture of metals. What do copper and tin form? What do copper and zinc form? Location - groups 3-12 Form bridge between metals on the left and right What do iron, carbon, chromium, and vanadium make?

Metals in the periodic table Metals in a group or family have similar properties. These family properties change gradually as you move across the table.

Alkali Metals Alkali metals are in group 1. How many valence electrons do these metals have? They are never found in nature alone as elements, just compounds. Soft, shiny and often white. VERY reactive. Valence electron is easily transferred in a chemical reaction. Common metal – sodium and potassium

Alkaline Earth Metals Located in family 2. How many valence electrons do they have? Also, found in nature alone as elements, just compounds. Reactive – less than alkali but more than other metals. Fairly hard, gray white and good conductor of electricity. Common metal – magnesium and calcium

Transition Metals Very similar to one another Hard, shiny, good conductors of electricity Stable – react slowly or not at all What is the most common metal that you can think of? Include common metals- iron, copper, nickel, silver and gold

Metal in Mixed Groups Groups 13-16 are mixed groups that include metals, nonmetals and metalloids. Not as reactive as metals on the left side of the periodic table. The most familiar metals are aluminum, tin, and lead.

What is another name for the Lanthanides & Actinides? They are called Rare Earth metals. They are located at the bottom of the periodic table. These elements fit between periods 6 & 7. All of the elements after uranium in the table were created artificially in labs.
