1 Sigma Sigma Phi Sigma Chapter 2016 Annual Report Presented by: Katie Becker, Sigma Chapter President

2 Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine Sigma Chapter is represented at the University of Pikeville- Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. UP-KYCOM is the 19 th school of osteopathic medicine in the country.

3 Medicine in the Mountains – Situated in the heart of Eastern Kentucky Appalachian Mountains, UP-KYCOM is dedicated to producing primary care physicians who will serve this region and surrounding rural areas.

4 Pikeville, Kentucky Developments – KYCOM ranked 11 th in rural medicine of all medical schools – Inaugural class of 2020 for Kentucky College of Optometry to share our campus – Economic growth is substantial with new restaurants and stores Challenges – Isolated in the mountains, region is underserved – Poverty, unemployment, Medicaid and uninsured, and mortality are higher than state and national averages – Opioid epidemic concerns

5 Giving Back to Community – Fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Association brought in: $300 – Culminated in October 2015 local event Walk to End Alzheimer’s – UP-KYCOM Relay for Life Chair: Mary Nguy, OMS-II – Raised $1550 for American Cancer Society – Culminated in June 2016 local event Relay for Life – All 2 nd year SSP members helped conduct Osteopathic Medicine Mock Practical Examinations for first year students – Assist COSGP with orientation week events – Support KYCOM faculty by working graduation

10 Current Projects making community a priority – Walk to End Alzheimer’s  September 17 th, 2016 – Fundraising Chair: Rebecca Bryan – Participating in walk, helping with registration, fundraising at the event – D.A.R.E. – Partnering with local police department to address drugs with youth in our at-risk community – Little Free Library – Establishing and maintaining a free book exchange in local park to promote literacy – Pikeville Haunted Trail – Late October- raises funds for the local police and fire department, as well partners with a farm to feed their horses for the winter. – YMCA Homework Helpers – Partnering with Rotoract to create more opportunities to help local school children with homework tutoring as well as mentorship

11 Future Projects – Establishing a Big/Little Professional Mentorship within the fraternity – Will be between every other class (i.e. Class of 2017 paired with Class of 2019) – Offers insights into rotations, residency match, adjusting to professional life for younger classes – Keeps older classes connected to the fraternity and to the school – Partnering with the newly established Eastern Kentucky Needle Exchange – Needle exchange program just formed by Pike County Health Dept in July 2016 – Volunteers will be at the forefront of battling opioid epidemic
