3 1. VIEW THIS PRESENTATION Thank you for joining us to learn more about the admission process for competitive allied health programs for fall semester 2014. This brief presentation will help you prepare for admission to one of the programs listed to the right. Be sure to complete the brief assessment at the end before meeting with your advisor. 4 1. GENERAL INFORMATION Application Period For Fall 2014 Admission October 1 thru November 15, 2013 Please note – for A.D.N. Bridge, admission is for summer 2014 All requirements must be met by the 5 PM deadline on November 15, 2013, in order to qualify to take the TEAS® Applicants must meet with a Student Services advisor to apply

GENERAL INFORMATION All of the following must be completed by 5 PM on Nov. 15 General Application for Admission FOCUS 2 (must be complete by 3 PM on Nov. 15) Documentation of Program Specific Requirements Documentation of College Readiness in English and Math Completion of Selection Form with Advisor All of the following must be completed by 5 PM on Dec. 20 Official transcripts documenting successful completion of points courses Completion of the TEAS ® Version V

GENERAL INFORMATION TEAS (0-99) Specific Courses (0-20) Residents of Buncombe/ Madison County (5) TOTAL POINTS (124 max) Points System Overview TEAS® Version V Adjusted Composite Score Five (5) points each for four completed college courses with a grade of “C” or higher (ACA 111, 115, 118, or 122; ENG 111, 112, 113, or 114; MAT 110 or higher; 4+ semester credit hour human anatomy and physiology) Based on address at time of file review in January 2014 TOTAL POINTS earned are used for ranking in first and second choice programs

7 1. GENERAL INFORMATION Criminal Backgrounds and Drug Use Criminal background checks and drug screenings may be required by certain clinical sites. These are conducted by an outside vendor at the student’s expense. Successful completion of clinical rotations is required for program completion. Some program licensing or certification bodies may require criminal background checks at the time of application for licensure. Be sure to review the criteria for your program of interest to determine what rules apply and whom to contact. A-B Tech advisors and faculty cannot provide answers to questions in this area as they are not the final deciding organization.

8 2. GENERAL APPLICATION TO A-B TECH All individuals interested in admission to a competitive program must first submit a general application for admission. Applicants are encouraged to complete the New Student Orientation. New Student Orientation must be completed prior to registering for curriculum classes. Already a current student? COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS Students interested in receiving transfer credit for college courses taken elsewhere must submit official transcripts to the Records and Registration Office at A-B Tech Important points to remember College must be regionally accredited Grade earned must be a “C” or higher Course title and credit hours must be similar Transcript must be from college at which the course was taken Taken classes at A-B Tech? You don’t need to request an A-B Tech transcript WHAT IS OFFICIAL? Sent directly from institution to A-B Tech Sealed copy in official college envelope If hand-delivered, do NOT open the envelope SEND TRANSCRIPTS TO: A-B Tech Community College Admissions Office 340 Victoria Road Asheville, NC 28801

10 4. PROGRAM SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS A few programs have additional requirements that must be met by the November 15 deadline Associate Degree Nursing Practical Nursing P.N. to A.D.N. Bridge Dental Hygiene Surgical Technology Please review the next two slides for details

PROGRAM SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS Associate Degree and Practical Nursing NURSE AIDE I  Documentation (transcript or completion certificate) of a North Carolina state approved NA I course  Current NA I certification documented on the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry  Exceptions  Current NC NA II certification  Current NC P.N. licensure  Current enrollment in the A-B Tech Practical Nursing Program P.N. to A.D.N. Bridge NC P.N. LICENSE AND PHARMACOLOGY COURSE  Documentation of current, unrestricted North Carolina Practical Nursing license  Current enrollment in, or completion of, the following courses: BIO 168, 169 & 175; ENG 111 & 114; PSY 150 & 241; one 3-credit-hour humanities course. A grade of “C” or higher is required in each.  Official transcripts showing completion of (or current enrollment in) one of the following with a grade of “C” or better within the last two (2) years at a regionally accredited institution:  NUR 117 – Pharmacology at an NC Community College  College Pharmacology or Nursing Pharmacology

DEMONSTRATE COLLEGE READINESS Individuals must document college readiness in both English and math Applicants must qualify for ENG 111 – Expository Writing AND place above the College’s DMA 050 course Current enrollment in ENG 111 or a college-level math course using Informed Consent does NOT meet this requirement Students who did not meet the requirement before October 1, 2013, are eligible to take the placement assessment once during the application period Requirements may be met in several ways COLLEGE READINESS OPTIONS Transfer credit for college level courses Placement assessment scores Completion of required developmental sequences before November application deadline

DEMONSTRATE COLLEGE READINESS ENGLISH READINESS Successful completion of or transfer credit for ENG 111 Successful completion of A-B Tech quarter courses (ENG 0102, 102, 150, or 153) Successful completion of DRE 098, RED 090 and/or ENG 090/090A Placement/Assessment Scores (5 years old or less) Accuplacer Scores: Reading Comprehension (80+) and Sentence Skills (86+) SAT: Writing (500+) and Critical Reading (500+) ACT: English (21+) and Reading (18+) COMPASS/ASSET scores – please speak with an advisor for details

DEMONSTRATE COLLEGE READINESS MATH READINESS Successful completion of or transfer credit for MAT 115, 161, 151, 171, 172, 271 or higher Successful completion of A-B Tech quarter courses (MAT 096, 097, 101, 102, 150, or 151) Successful completion of DMA 050 or MAT 070 Placement/Assessment Scores (5 years old or less) Accuplacer Scores: Arithmetic (55+) and Elementary Algebra (55+) NC Diagnostic Assessment and Placement: Score of “9” on each module (010, 020, 030, 040, and 050) SAT: Math (500+) or ACT: Math (22+) COMPASS/ASSET scores – please speak with an advisor for details

SELECTION FORM WITH ADVISOR Students who meet all eligibility requirements will complete a Selection Form with a Student Services Advisor Students may select a 1 st and 2 nd choice program A 2 nd choice is not required. A program may be added before the Nov. 15 deadline. Students will not be considered for a 2 nd choice program if selected for the 1 st choice program 1 st and 2 nd choice may be switched before the Dec. 20 deadline Students will receive a “ticket” to take the TEAS ® by the Dec. 20 deadline Students will meet with a staff member in Admissions to finalize the Selection Form DIDN’T MEET THE REQUIREMENTS? Applicants have until Nov. 15 at 5 PM to document any missing items Students not eligible for 2014 admission are encouraged to speak with an advisor about career alternatives

18 8. TEST OF ESSENTIAL ACADEMIC SKILLS Qualified applicants who complete the Selection Form and receive the “ticket” for TEAS® must take the exam no later than December 20, 2013. Students who have taken the TEAS ® Version V previously may opt to use their scores within the last five years. The highest composite score is used and only one set of scores is accepted during the application period. TEAS ® is only offered on specific dates and times – please plan ahead! 1 Schedule and pay for the TEAS ® Version V 2 Study and prepare for the TEAS ® 3 Take the TEAS ® on the date and time scheduled

NOTIFICATION LETTERS Students receive two letters after completing the Selection Form POINTS LETTER - FEBRUARY Summary of points earned for TEAS ®, residency, and courses Total Points Dates students may come to discuss calculation errors NOTIFICATION LETTER - MARCH Status for 1 st and 2 nd choices. One of three options will be listed: Admitted Alternate List Not Admitted

20 FINAL STEPS Now that you have completed your competitive admissions overview Complete the assessment ( http://www.abtech.edu/sites/default/files/users/mpeterson/2014_allied_health_assessment.pdf ) Take the completed assessment to a Student Services advisor Services for true distance students (those living in counties that do not border Buncombe county) Complete the assessment E-mail distanceadvising@abtech.edu for assistance. Please use the Subject: Allied Health Applicationdistanceadvising@abtech.edu Border counties include Madison, Haywood, Henderson, McDowell, Rutherford, Transylvania, and Yancey. Students in these counties should visit the Bailey Building on Victoria Road in Asheville.
