3 Essential Questions How is theme developed in a short story? What conflict is present? What is the author’s purpose for telling the story? What does this mean for my own creative writing?

4 Literary Elements Literary elements are present in ALL pieces of fiction, both short and long We will be focusing on five: plot, setting, theme, characters, and conflict

5 Setting The time, place, physical details, and circumstances in which a story occurs.

6 Plot The selection and arrangement of incidents that shape the action and give the story a focus.

7 Characters A person responsible for the thoughts and actions within a story.

8 Conflict A struggle between two opposing characters or forces.

9 Theme A common thread or repeated idea that is incorporated throughout a story.
