3 Establishing a STRONG Leadership Team The principal plays a crucial role in establishing a leadership team. (S)He can’t be the Lone Ranger! The effectiveness of the team needs to be evaluated and adjusted as necessary – Defining effectiveness: Broad representation ( individuals who are respected, influential, hard working, and have content area knowledge/skill) Big picture thinkers who understand the connections of RtI/school improvement to initiatives 3

4 Why RtI School Based Leadership Team? Aligns and connects RtI to systems in the building Team members already know what is happening at the building (not to give up something that already works) Enhance sustainability over time (multiple people hear the same thing) We learn from each other!

13 Sage-N-Scribe Activity Partner 1 (Sage) summarize the 7 reasons why school-based leadership teams are important (as cited on the previous slides) Partner 2 listen and record responses (Scribe). When partner 1 is done talking, partner 2 add to partner 1’s response.

14 School-based Leadership Team Identify team members (establish norms, roles, and purpose) Establish and/or monitor specific goals for school-wide initiatives while engaging in problem solving – Examine student reading achievement data. – Identify the gap between current levels and expected levels of student achievement. – Identify instructional, curricular, and environmental barriers to student achievement. – Design and implement instruction and interventions. – Evaluate the plan by examining data from assessments, observations, etc.

15 Resource Map Purpose: Organizes instructional materials, time, personnel, professional development, and assessments, and data analysis. Development: School-based Leadership Team creates a map at beginning of year Uses: Aligns resources with students’ needs and district guidelines identified in district’s school improvement plan

17 Resource Map Activity On Post-it notes, identify school resources used to support literacy, math, science, and behavior instruction across the curriculum. Think of the resources related to instructional materials, personnel, professional development, assessments, data meetings (when, where and what will you examine) Place post-it notes on labeled charts around the room

Development: Created by School-based Leadership Team or content area teams Uses: To inform teachers how to plan/re-teach instruction as well as to measure student learning.
