Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is any sustainable energy source that comes from the natural environment. The most common forms of renewable energy are solar, wind, water or hydro, biomass and geothermal energy. Sunlight can be converted to electricity using photovoltaic (solar electric) panels. Wind and flowing water can be used to generate electricity. Trees can provide wood for heating and materials for buildings, while grains, such as corn and wheat, can be fermented into ethanol and used as a fuel for automobiles.

What is Renewable Energy? Solar energy Biomass energy Geothermal energy Small hydro Wave or tidal energy Wind Energy Passive solar energy

Solar energy The sun has produced energy for billions of years. Solar energy is the sun’s rays (solar radiation) that reach the Earth. This energy can be converted into other forms of energy, such as heat and electricity.

Biomass energy Wood was once our main fuel. We burned it to heat our homes and cook our food. Wood still provides a small percentage of the energy we use, but its importance as an energy source is dwindling. Sugar cane is grown in some areas, and can be fermented to make alcohol, which can be burned to generate power. Alternatively, the cane can be crushed and the pulp (called "bagasse") can be burned, to make steam to drive turbines. Other solid wastes, can be burned to provide heat, or used to make steam for a power station. "Bioconversion" uses plant and animal wastes to produce "biofuels" such as methanol, natural gas, and oil. We can use rubbish, animal manure, woodchips, seaweed, corn stalks and other wastes.

Geothermal energy The word geothermal comes from the Greek words geo (earth) and therme (heat). So, geothermal energy is heat from within the Earth. We can recover this heat as steam or hot water and use it to heat buildings or generate electricity. Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source because the heat is continuously produced inside the Earth.

Small hydro Hydro power is an old established method of energy production. Water is captured via a filter / intake structure and passes downhill in a pipeline to the turbine. The water exits the pipe under pressure through a nozzle and strikes a water wheel (runner). The force of which spins the runner which is direct coupled to an electricity generating permanent magnet alternator or enhanced performance induction generator. The electricity is then electronically regulated and transmitted via cable for use.

Wave or tidal energy Wave energy is produced when electricity generators are placed on the surface of the ocean. The energy provided is most often used in desalination plants, power plants and water pumps. Energy output is determined by wave height, wave speed, wavelength, and water density. To date there are only a handful of experimental wave generator plants in operation around the world.

Wind energy Like old fashioned windmills, today’s wind machines (also called wind turbines) use blades to collect the wind’s kinetic energy. The wind flows over the blades creating lift, like the effect on airplane wings, which causes them to turn. The blades are connected to a drive shaft that turns an electric generator to produce electricity.

Passive solar energy What is passive solar energy? The use of energy from the sun without the help of photovoltaics is reffered to as passive solar energy. Passive solar energy methods are a great way to make use of clean and inexaustible energy from the sun. Methods of passively collecting solar energy include solar ovens and well- planned indoor heating techniques.

Renewables energy´s are not new! Renewable energy sources have been used for centuries.

Renewables are not new! A windmill is a machine that is powered by the energy of the wind. It is designed to convert the energy of the wind into more useful forms using rotating blades or sails. The term also refers to the structure it is commonly built on. In much of Europe, windmills served originally to grind grain (hence the "mill" derivation), though later applications included pumping water and, more recently, generation of electricity.graingeneration of electricity

Reasons for Renewable Energy renewables cannot yet replace all existing energy sources Finding alternative sources of energy is important. have practical applications in innovative niche markets minimal pollution
