Laboratory Rules and Safety

1.Wear safety goggles at all times. 2.Closed toe shoes and laboratory apron must be worn at all times while performing labs. 3.Never eat or drink in the laboratory. 4.Perform only authorized experiments. 5.Report all accidents and injuries immediately. 6.Do not used cracked or broken glassware. 7.Never directly inhale vapors. 8.Never taste a chemical.

9.Wash hands after each lab period. 10.Long hair should be secured when working around flames. 11.Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment. 12.Use the fume hood when working with volatile chemicals. 13. Experiments must be personally monitored at all times. 14. Use a brush and dust pan to clean up broken glass. 15. Never look into a container that is being heated. 16.Heated metals and heated glass look the same as cool metals and glass and remain hot for a long time.

17. Do not touch any equipment or chemicals until instructed to do so. 18. Never throw insoluble materials into the sinks. 19. Do not contaminate chemicals. Be sure that all spatulas are clean before inserting them into reagent bottles. 20. Do not return excess chemicals to reagent bottles. Either share with another group or discard excess chemicals. 21. Weigh all chemicals in containers. 22. Clean up all spills immediately.

24. Keep your work area clean at all times. 25. Before leaving the lab, make sure the water and gas are off and return all equipment to the designated place. USE COMMON SENSE!!!

6 Chemical Awareness Know what you are working with. – Container Labels – Material Safety Data Sheets Chemicals can exist in one of three chemical states: solid liquid gas

7 Labeling All chemical compounds must be labeled and classified Any container not labeled should be considered hazardous - call the teacher immediately Manufacturer must provide information about the hazards of a chemical using MSDS and labels – Identity of chemical – Name and address of the Manufacturer or other responsible party – Chemical, Physical and Health Hazards

8 Hazardous Material Information System (HMIS)

9 NFPA CHEMICAL HAZARD LABEL 2 3 4 0 Least Serious 4 Most Serious 40 Flammable vapor which burns readily Substance is stable

10 Material Safety Data Sheets A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a safety sheet with important physical and chemical properties as well as the hazards of a chemical On file for all purchased chemicals. Includes all information shown on a chemical label and more. Different formats are used by different chemical companies.

11 You must have a MSDS for any “hazardous” chemical. 1. Carcinogen 2. Corrosive 3. Irritant 4. Sensitizer 5. Highly Toxic 6. Toxic 7. Target Organ Effects According to OSHA, a chemical is hazardous if it is a...
