Meteoroids, Asteroids, & Comets

Meteoroids  Definition  Size  Meteors  Meteorites

Meteoroids Space Rocks. Rocky and/or Metallic. Most are left over from the formation of the solar system (~4.6 billion years ago)

Meteoroids

Meteoroid – A rock in space. Meteor – A space rock entering our atmosphere (shooting star). Meteorite – When it hits the Earth.

Asteroids  Definition  Size & Location  Exploration

Asteroids Space Rocks. Rocky and/or Metallic. Bigger than Meteoroids; generally between Mars and Jupiter.

Comets  Definition  Size & Parts  Types  Exploration

Comets Space Rocks. Icy & Rocky; Dirty Snowballs. House size to 10 s of miles.

Comets

As the comet nears the Sun, solar winds and heat melt ice which shoots off the comet like jets of gas.

Comets

In 1705, Edmond Halley (1656–1742) applied Newton's method to twenty-three cometary apparitions that had occurred between 1337 and 1698. He noted that three of these had very similar orbital elements. Confident that these three apparitions had been three appearances of the same comet, he predicted that it would appear again in 1758. Halley's predicted return date was later refined by a team of three French mathematicians, who predicted the date of the comet's 1759 return to within one month's accuracy. When the comet returned as predicted, it became known as Halley's Comet. It will next appear in 2061.
