Campus Resources at COTC: Office of Career Development and Experiential Learning Services Helps students determine a major Learn what to do with your major Explore careers Career fairs Creation of resumes/cover letters Individualized career planning and consultation with job search strategies Labor market information Developing effective interviewing skills Information on employer’s expectations and a resource library

5 COTC CAREER FAIRS Career fairs offer students and alumni an opportunity to meet and network with employers form area businesses. The COTC career fair is held in Newark at Adena Hall. On the COTC website they have several tips for attending the website, some are: Take 5 minutes at the door to review the list of attending facilities Highlight those you want to talk with so you can organize your time efficiently Dress and act professionally Go alone to the various employers Make direct eye contact and shake hands firmly Walk confidently Have a positive greeting

6 WHAT RESOURCES ARE THERE CON’T Knox County Employment Resources: Opportunity Knox Employment Center Resume/Cover Letter Assistance Access to a phone, fax and copier Job leads and internet searches Dislocated worker services Career counseling Assessments and testing Youth Programs GED preparation and testing Job interview techniques & training Employment specialists who assist with job searches Classes in employability skills Computer skills & credit counseling Career aptitude Work keys testing and networking groups

8 KNOX COUNTY ONLINE RESOURCES Opportunity Knox has information online with a link to job searches at OhioMeansJobs.com http://www.co.knox.oh.us/offices/employment/ Ohio.careers.org is an online site where you can search for colleges, jobs, view occupation profiles which include job descriptions, earnings, outlook and industry profiles. http://www.careers.org/

9 SUGGESTIONS FOR COLLEGES TO IMPROVE PROCESS Increase the number of job fairs each year. Holding a job fair at the end of each semester for graduating students. Offer mentoring programs that partner graduating students with perspective employers to mentor students in their career field and job search. Partner with community agencies, government offices and temporary employment agencies to provide complete job experiences, internships and opportunities for graduating students.

10 Overall I think graduating students need to take advantage of all job search opportunities, events and education to help them find the right job in their career. Hopefully colleges and community resources will continue to grow and benefit the graduating students who have invested in their education. It may not be easy and the sooner you start utilizing your resources the sooner you will find your perfect dream job.
