WHO CAN YOU TRUST??

WHAT IS RELIABLE? Dependable Trustworthy

BACKGROUNDINFO 15-20 years ago, had to go to the library and use books Now most info is on the Internet BUT DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ!!!

PROBLEM: Tons of info on the internet Anyone that has Internet can put stuff online either on websites or blogs Lack of “policing” of information Cannot Trust all Online Resources!!

KEY??? Telling the difference between reliable and unreliable resources INVESTIGATE!!!

#1—Look of the Website Does the site look professional?? Most reliable sources have a logo

#2--Publisher Who published the website? Is it verified? Facts need to be checked and edited Reliable sites are just as good as encyclopedias, academic journals and newspapers---YOU CAN TRUST Look at the ending of your web address (URL suffix:.gov—U.S. Government.edu– Accredited college or universities

#3—Author Need to know who wrote it to determine if it is reliable Look them up to see if he/she is qualified Contact information? Be careful about using the source if there is no name or contact information

#4--Biased Does the site have a definite point of view or opinion? You WANT a site that gives all views/sides of a topic Contains FACTS NOT OPINIONS Difficult to do so you need to look at ABOUT US to see about the organization

#5—In Depth? Should contain statistics Links to other sources

#6—Accuracy Need to check facts with other sources at least two---see if they say the same thing

#7—Up to Date Look for created or revised date Beware of Link Rot—page not found (nonexistent) or moved
