11 Fiction  Fiction is divided in genres.  Genre – a category of literature  How many genres of literature are there?

13 Mystery  A story involving:  Strangeness  Solving a puzzling event or situation  Something unknown  Solving a crime  Centered around a person who investigates wrongdoing  Centered around a person, or people, employed to obtain secret information

15 Science Fiction  Stories that often tell about science and technology of the future  Settings:  In the future  In space  On a different world  In a different universe or dimension

17 Historical Fiction  A story set in a historical period  Characters talk, dress, and act like people of that time period  Story involves real people and actual events that happened in history

19 Adventure  Characters who behave like real people and animals  Settings are real, or could be real  Events could happen in real life  Story has action or suspense, or both  An adventurer – a fictional character who lives by their wits and their skills

25 Fable  Very short  Usually have two or three characters  Characters may be animals or things that act like people  Teach a lesson or a moral

27 Myth  A story that offers an explanation of how something in nature looks or happens  A story that explains why people act as they do  Characters may be human or gods or goddesses

29 Folktale  A story that has been told and retold over generations  Different countries have similar folktales, but have cultural differences  Characters can be animals or objects that can speak  Story often teaches a moral or a lesson  Good or smart wins over evil or not so smart  Story is told using pronouns

31 Fairy Tale  Begins with a phrase like “once upon a time…”  Setting is a faraway or imaginary land  Characters are often royal – kings, queens, princes, princesses  Things happen or appear in sets of three  The granting of wishes  The use of magical powers  A happy ending where good wins over evil
