Chapter 20 Section 5 Forecasting Weather Objectives: -Compare and contrast the different technologies used to gather weather data -Analyze weather symbols, station models, and weather maps -Describe how weather forecasts are made

Sources of Data Satellites Data from weather balloons Weather stations Weather radar Airplanes Ships

Satellites Two Types of Satellite Images: NOAANOAA – Visible Images Black and White Pictures White Images show light reflected off clouds or snow cover Disadvantage of visible images, unavailable at night – Infrared Uses Temperature to create images Useful day or night Bright areas indicate cold temps Darker areas indicate warm temps

Radiosondes Measures Temperature, Pressure and humidity from different altitudes Attached to a balloon By piecing together these data, meteorologists can produce weather maps

Surface Observations Analyzing data from weather stations can also help with predicting weather Most weather stations are at or near airports – Commercial jets are equipped with weather instruments

Station Model Maps that contain – Temperature – Dew point – Barometric pressure – Wind speed and direction – Cloud cover – Station Model Station Model
