Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Comprehensive Local Research Network Overview  “Health & Wealth”  NIHR Landscape  Local NIHR Infrastructure: What’s what?!  New and emerging structures  Key priorities & themes  What this really means to you?  How and where to get support?

Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Comprehensive Local Research Network “Health & Wealth”  NIHR Purpose: To improve the health and wealth of the nation through research  Government priority

Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Comprehensive Local Research Network “Health & Wealth” How & Why?  Research is important for growth because:  Supports life-sciences industry life-sciences industry important for economic growth  Cutting edge research in UK = improved outcomes, earlier  Offers patients the chance to get involved in new treatments/pathways = improved care  Improved outcomes also = lower ongoing costs to improve population health

Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Comprehensive Local Research Network  R&D Teams in Trusts – R&D Team at NHfT are the best place to start....  R&D Teams in Trusts – R&D Team at NHfT are the best place to start.... more from them to follow!  NIHR organisations: support studies on the NIHR portfolio – randomised controlled clinical trials of interventions and other well designed commercial and non-commercial studies  LNR Comprehensive Local Research Network (CLRN)  Getting started with studies  Help integrate “doing” research with NHS service delivery  Research governance  Funding advice & guidance, to meet NHS service support costs  Support with recruitment & troubleshooting along the way  All clinical specialties; all care settings Local (NIH)Research Infrastructure

Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Comprehensive Local Research Network  Thames Valley Dementia and Neurodegenerative Diseases Network (TV DeNDRoN)  Support the development, set up and delivery of clinical research in the NHS.  In the dementias, Huntington’s disease, motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases.  Heart of England Mental Health Research Network (HoE MHRN)  Work closely with NHS Trusts that run mental health services.  A workforce dedicated to supporting research projects by identifying and recruiting eligible participants  Help research teams find mental health professionals interested in research participation Local NIHR Infrastructure

Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Comprehensive Local Research Network  LNR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC)  Collaborative partnerships - university and surrounding NHS organisations  Focused on improving patient outcomes through conducting applied health research, followed by.....  Support the translation of research evidence into practice  East Midlands Research Design Service (EM-RDS)  All aspects of preparing grant applications for applied research in health and social care: Advice on which research funding streams Protocol development, evidence, health economics, stats etc. Patient & Public Involvement in research Local NIHR Infrastructure

Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Comprehensive Local Research Network  Biomedical Research Units - BRUs  Undertake translational clinical research in priority areas of high disease burden and clinical need.  Three locally – all based in Leicester: Cardiovascular Disease Respiratory Disease (new April 2012) Nutrition, Diet & Lifestyle (new April 2012)  Clinical Trials Unit - CTU  Specialist units with expertise to centrally coordinate multi-centre clinical trials and other well designed studies  Includes: design, conduct, data management, publicity, analysis and reporting of a study  Leicester has a provisionally registered unit Local NIHR Infrastructure

Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Comprehensive Local Research Network New and emerging structures  Research network landscape a bit cluttered  Intention to streamline  Proposed new structure by Spring 2014  ICRN: Integrated Clinical Research Networks Large regional coverage: East Midlands region? More organised geography Similar functions as present – research delivery & governance Hopefully same helpful staff  Another new kid on the block - Academic Health Science Networks, AHSNs Goal: improve patient and population health outcomes by translating research into practice

Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Comprehensive Local Research Network Key priorities & themes  Focus on participant recruitment  Deliver research to time and target  Commencing research promptly due to streamlined research governance  Big national push on commercial work  Delivering more with less – ensure our processes are “LEAN”  Managing in set and often falling budgets and monitoring finance carefully  Supporting research in a constantly changing NHS

Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Comprehensive Local Research Network What does this mean to you?  It is still a good time to get involved in Research  Research remains well supported by DH  Trusts should always be able to cover costs  And in some cases to make money  There are lots of places to get assistance

Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Comprehensive Local Research Network  Opportunity to increase research activity at NHfT  Additional support and advice for research related matters  Potential to receive (further) funding for activity  Research Taskforce available for additional support, as needed  Practical guidance to get studies set-up  Help to ensure they deliver What this practically means to you?

Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Comprehensive Local Research Network How and where to get support?  R&D Team at NHfT – contacts to follow  LNR Comprehensive Local Research Network Kylie Chapman, Melanie Waring or me – 0116 258 6185  Thames Valley DeNDRoN Tel: 01865 234310, Email: Help.Research@nhs.net  Heart of England MHRN Tel: 0121 301 4326, Email heartofenglandhub@bsmhft.nhs.uk  LNR CLAHRC NHfT CLAHRC Co-ordinator: Rachel Lovesy, rachel.lovesy@nhft.nhs.uk  East Midlands Research Design Service Tel: 0116 252 3276
