3 So What Does the PD Look Like?  Pick a Partner (someone you don’t know)  Two key characteristics of ineffective professional development  Two key characteristics of effective professional development. How do you avoid the pitfalls?

4 What do Power Struggles Look Like in Your School (a.k.a. The Opener) The “I’m Bigger, I Win” The “The Bully” Learning Goal: We will be able to identify and demonstrate effective use of at least one strategy to avoid a power struggle.

5 OK – Let’s Go to the Vignettes (a.k.a. Pre-assessment)  Pick a Lead  Lead reads vignette out loud to table group  Table group task: 1.Two strategies the person or persons in the vignette could have used to avoided the PS

6 Specific Solutions to Avoid Power Struggles (a.k.a. “The Learning”)  Lead discussion on the “why” behind avoiding power struggles  Review the six strategies to avoid power struggles

7 Specific Solutions to Avoid Power Struggles 1.Offer Choices 2.Avoid Negative Words and Tone 3.Show Understanding 4.Delay Your Interaction 5.Be Prepared to Walk Away 6.Be Proactice – Problem solve re-occurring issues

8 Applying the Learning (a.k.a. “Practice”)  Return to our vignette – which strategy(ies) might the person use to diffuse the situation?

9 Did the Learning Occur? (a.k.a. “Formative Assessment”)  Create an opportunity for staff to demonstrate their learning about Power Struggles:  Pick a partner: share two ideas each on quick formative assessment methods

10 When the Power Struggle Happens Anyway: School Leader as Coach How will you, the school leader, coach the adult about how to go back and resolve the PS after the fact? (Use your vignette as an example)
